I am looking to get into car hauling, but I don't want to be the middle-man for some drug cartel.
Q: How do you guys handle the issue of possibly transporting drugs stashed in vehicles? I've seen more than one car hauler unload every vehicle at random weigh station & DOT inspections. States like New Mexico run drug dogs down the line of vehicles waiting to get through the checkpoint. Who is liable if drugs are found in a vehicle? Does the truck driver go to jail?
I am interviewing for an auto transport position tomorrow. The company is based out of Detroit. I am not sure how to handle a situation where I am inspected and cars are stuffed with variety of street-pharmaceuticals. I am sure I will do my best to inspect every vehicle beforehand, but it's impossible to find every hiding spot.
Do the police offer any type of amnesty inspection perhaps prior to shipping?

I would say if that's a concern you have, look for another niche in trucking. Why risk your livelihood? Although I don't think you have anything to worry about, there's other jobs that pay just as well without having to worry about such things.

I got pulled over in Texas , once.... they thought it was strange we only had one SUV on the trailer
They got all uo into that suv , we didnt offer to remove it from the trailer and it was up on top
Also got pulled into a Mississippi scalehouse when running reefer for a owner OP, some his paper work didnt match up , so they though we might have drugs in the produce. -
I got pulled into an immigration check point. They asked what I was hauling? I said "drugs" (I was hauling pharmaceuticals). It was funny until I handed over the shippers paperwork. I hadn't noticed that the guy at the dock had been lazy, or couldn't spell. Instead of writing "pharmaceuticals" on the documents, he just wrote "drugs". And, I had copied his description of the load onto my paperwork without even thinking. There was no other description of the load anywhere in the documents. Just "drugs". Not a good thing for me...
Border Control broke my seal and ran dogs through the trailer looking for contraband. The shipper was pissed, I was delayed for hours, and then the receiver tried to claim that the load had been "contaminated" or otherwise "compromised". This was not amusing to my company.
The word "pharmaceuticals" would have been no more descriptive than the word "drugs", except "pharmaceuticals implies it's a legit shipment, while "drugs" implies something illegal. Either way, the shipper wouldn't have identified the actual drugs the shipment contained for risk of theft.
The moral of the story is not to joke with border control or law enforcement agents. They have no sense of humor... LOL!Last edited: Jul 8, 2014

??? Isn't any truck a potential target? I don't think it's an area of concern unless you are crossing the border and bringing back junk. I highly doubt new vehicles are used. Let's say you did get something hidden in your load. The truth would come out in court. Your logbook and BOL are a legal documents. Most companies have a repertoire built with border crossings. Just don't work for some fly by night outfit. Your destination of delivery ought to be a clue of suspicion.
You have better odds of getting hit by lightning.wannabe trckin again and sexystuff911 Thank this. -
I got pulled over this one time and he wrote me a ticket for speeding.

They can hide drugs anywhere, we check the bottom of the box to make sure no drugs or bombs had been place underneath.

I got pulled at the White Sands check point once, even though I had a decent looking load and my company name identifies me as a Marine, one of the good guys. I had to hang out to the side as they drove the X-ray van around my truck. But I didn't care, heck the guy next to me had a dog running through his sleeper LOL! I figure it this way- the only reason I get in the car is to load and unload only. I don't have an inspection report of the interior or trunk on my BOL, so if push came to shove I'd take a lie detector test, but unless you're a shady dude, I wouldn't worry.
