    Some are.

Since engine brakes are not a regulatory requirement you will lose, but if that's the hill you choose to defend...

Probably half of the signs say "No unmuffled engine brake". Makes a big difference in enforcement.

say you work nights, sleep days, would you appreciate being woke up by someone who wants to hear an loud obnoxious noise?

You can get away with it in an Emergancy stop, to avoid a wreck.

Almost 2 years ago when I got my CDL one of my first loads I picked up put me at 80k gross, coming out of the location it was a downhill with a posted limit of 15mph till you cross the small town that has a posted no engine brake sign.

I decided to creep down the hill in 4th thinking I wouldn’t need the jakes. I know I know I was new at that time. Well 4th didn’t hold, so I slowed to 3rd and 2nd and that didn’t hold. Well guess what popped in 4th hit the jakes and down we go.

choice is your life saved or wake someone else up.

I choose to save my life.
So if it’s posted my rule of thumb is:

to save a life : yes
    For fun?: no

Some might be ignorant like you said, but likely most know it's wrong but simply don't care. Then there's always the ones seeking attention, hey, look at me and my truck. Then there's the ones that do it on purpose because they hate their existence and intentionally want to annoy others.

I've seen signs that say no Jake between the hours of X & X, and I've seen signs for no Jake at all within the city limits.

Personally, it doesn't bother me at all, but it does other folks, especially at 2 in the morning. It boils down to being considerate of others and common sense, which isn't common anymore at all....

I’m straight piped and use my jakes mostly everywhere during the day but at night do avoid using them in towns especially when residential areas are nearby.

So the city is telling you how to avoid trouble and you are choosing to have the trouble they told you how to avoid?

Going thru a town probably a 30-40 mph zone you don’t really need it anyways.....

Besides it take hp to make noise....:)

I’m not sure how truthful that statement is. Perhaps the engine brake does increase fuel consumption (very minimally), but for some other reason?
