Keep a car ahead of you.
I pay particular care along the red river on the Oklahoma Side. Cattle has hides the color of pavement. Never see them until your rig is destroyed. Sure there is barbed wire fencing, but when they get yea big and want out, they are out. Itchy scratchy does not hurt them none.
How about some odd little tricks you have taught yourself about driving?

Im pretty difficult myself. But I know a pretty good driver when I see one.
Its relatively rare. But the few I have run into are Gods to paraphrase. Or rather taught god how to run the mountains he built for his amusement.Farmerbob1 and truckdriver31 Thank this. -
I cannot help one habit.
Open her up in the Smoky Mountains. There are three main routes across them depending on where you origin load is from and where you are going. Either Carolinas, Virginia and somewhere in between.
At night when no one is around you allowed her to use the inside lane of the curves. But not too fast. In my day Law was non existent and no governor so 65 to 85 and anywhere in between. Sometimes you drop her to 55 staying on the inside.
Indirectly if you find yourself on a curve you are not feeling good about drop your speed and "Fall" your wheels onto the right shoulder or inside of same curve. It will hold you. (Dry pavement only)
If you are in the woods somewhere and thinking it's meal time look for short stops at a diner. Before you get there and have to do a short stop yourself. Thats usually a spot to eat well.CorsairFanboy and truckdriver31 Thank this. -
No sweat at all. I didn’t take it that way. I could never be a trainer, either, I don’t think, specifically because of what you pointed out.Farmerbob1 Thanks this.

Im going out on a limb here.
US 1 above I-287 I think towards Avenel NJ etc. Thats miles of red lights with I think a 35 mph limit all the way up.
Make sure you catch the first green at the J&J facility. Already look at the next one. It should be green when you get half way to 2/3 way there, add 3 mph. Make sure it's green when you pass under. Not yellow.
Give or take 38 Plus or minus 7 adding speed when see yellow and subtracting when it wont change ahead of you at the second light. Its not a hard figure. But generally more or less it should be all greens all the way up.
Dont push it. There are probably cameras all over the place today. Just a thought. -
Most older trucks anyways you can lightly pull the trolley and lights will come onFarmerbob1 Thanks this.

A lot of my driving has been oilfield back road driving. I'll take night time driving anytime for the reasons you posted. Usually you can tell when someone is coming around that bend far before you can actually see emMACK E-6 and Farmerbob1 Thank this.

In Boise, by the flying j is Fred Meyers with a sushi bar in it. Does that count? I have yet to see sushi sold at truck stops. Some 7-11s with truck parking sell sushi
