Two reasons: options and money! If you live near a port or on a major freight lane you have more options. It's not a matter of finding a job - it's reading through pages of of ads to figure out who's telling the fewest lies. Options mean you can quit one job driving a 2019 Cascadia and drive another 2019 Cascadia with a different paint job 3 days later.

I drive out of Washington State. Washington has no income tax. In Washington if a worker isn't paid by the hour or on salary the employer must give you a paid 10 minute break every 4 hours. Most drivers are paid hourly because of that rule. Now, a driver in California can tell himself, "Sure, I give the state 9.3% of everything I earn but I can hang my head high because members of the Barbers and Cosmetologist Board here get more than $200,000/yr. when they retire and I helped to make that possible" or whatever in the hell they tell themselves to think living there is a good idea. The point is your pay (and how much you get to keep) can vary quite a bit depending on where you live. Choose wisely.
