I just refinanced my truck and the Barrow County, GA tag office is insisting that I will have to pay sales tax if I don’t have a “sales tax exemption number”. They said the GA Dept of revenue can provide that for me but they have been no help. There is a GA DOR form called the ST-5 that specifically states “according to such and such law this truck will be used in interstate commerce and is exempt from sales tax”, but the county tag office still says I have to have the proof of exemption.
Has anyone registered a title in GA recently who knows how to get around paying the sales tax?
GA trying to make me pay sales tax!?

I think form you're looking for is ST-5, the link will take you to the form you can download.
-
Yes but they aren’t accepting that as a valid exemption.

I am confused. Are you refinancing your truck that is already titled in Georgia (and the truck is in your name), or is this a truck that you had registered in another state or some other set of circumstances?
-
I was lease purchasing from Prime. I refinanced the truck with a new company. Now I will be listed as the owner with the finance company as a lien holder. So I’m transferring the title into GA when it was held in MO before.

Thanks. Almost sounds like they are treating your truck as a purchased vehicle, thus the sales tax.

You’re not exempt from sales tax unless you provide a proof that the truck is going to be used in interstate commerce:that means u have to be leased to a company or have your own authority, either way a lease agreement must be drafted showing the truck year model and vin # runing under that MC #.stillwurkin, olddog_newtricks and p608 Thank this.

Are you trying to get a Georgia tag?
-
How much are they actually asking for?
if it’s not a huge amount, might be better to pay it, if you can get the proper paperwork later, possible to re-file and request refund.csmith1281 Thanks this. -
They are saying I have to have a sales tax exemption number, which there is a spot for in the ST-5 form. I just don’t know how to get one of those. One lady told me the title had to match the name of the company I’m leasing to, so that may be a technicality that ends up screwing the little guy.
