So think about what you want to do when you get your own truck. Chances are if you have your own truck you'll be doing regional to OTR. Find a company that is in that type of work, flatbed, heavy haul, van, hazmat, reefer, etc etc. And apply. A couple of hills you have to climb for heads up, some companies will count military driving as experience, some won't, so you may be stuck driving for some crappy mega company making pennies for a year. After that with a good record you can typically get on at most places. 2nd hill will be Florida. Its absolutely horrible for trucking. Literally the highest insurance rates in the nation when you own your own truck and the market is saturated there with drivers. So when you get your own truck. You'll find it easy to get a load going home. But you're basically gonna pay to leave Florida.

Haha couldn't be any more true, its definitely hard being in the service with a family.

That seems exactly what I was looking for, but I could definitely see the stress on both partners and kids while doing so.

I didnt know that the GI Bill payed for that, thank you. I see a lot of people talk about food and things of that nature. What about things like hauling cars. Seems a little riskier but is it worth it?

What's OS/OW? And dry van is the long box trailers?

Whats LTL? And yeah I might consider pursuing other options but for the last 3 years all I've known is operating trucks and a little mechanics on them.
Thank you for that, I'm glad I'm finding this stuff out before it being put on me last minute when I get out and looking completely lost.

    Less than Load.

ODFL,(We did 7 years there), UPS etc.

Far more scheduled and higher pay.

Don’t miss out on that baby growing up.

There’s times a man has to be there for wife or children. Don’t be the guy 1,000 miles away driving for a company that says

    “We’ll route you home when we can . . . “

Have you done local? How's that? And you definitely have a point. Does that happen very often?

Never local, but yes - it happens often.

More older hands in here can share stories of being too far away, when they were needed.

From your first post - I’d have recommended another career. If it’s really what you think will make you happy - then LTL or local it should be.

Family first. Be thankful you have it. Protect accordingly.

Seems very annoying to have that happen. Thinking of a child mindset it'll probably be hard to understand that daddy isnt going to be home for x amount of time. For the LTL I skimmed over it but didnt do deep research it but what I read it said that there can be multiple small loads for different drop offs in one truck. Would that mean that you would have to drive multiple places, even different states, to make those deliveries?

    No - not at all.

Can someone explain the LTL system as it applies to home time and income to this hand?

Basically - scheduled runs - daily - drop and hook - good benefits/pay - team or solo - or local P and D (not recommended without experience).

Oh okay, I'll have to find some more info on that.

So like the trucks that have loads that hang off the side pretty much? And have the vehicle escorts?
