I'm in the process of obtaining my Class A CDL Permit. Wednesday (9-16-09) was the first time I took the real test at my local DMV. For $13.00, you're allowed 4 chances on each section. I had been studying my butt off for a few months now, but for some reason, I failed the General Knowledge section, which you have to pass before you can continue with any other sections. :biggrin_2556: I waited a day, and went back up there this morning, Friday, to take it again. Once again, I failed, but with less of a number missed than the first time. :biggrin_25521: I even studied the book this morning, & took tests online before ever going up there, and passed all of the tests that I took myself! Here is the website that I've been testing off of recently and passing:

    http://www.cristcdl.com/otc/

The links on the left of that page take you to a test page for that particular section of the test. I've even ventured to this site and taken the tests on my own, with passing, flying colors:

    http://www.testprepreview.com/cdl_practice.htm

Scroll down a bit, and you'll see the links to the individual tests. After reading over the handbook and studying these online pages, and questions from the book, I still have failed the real thing, and I have no idea why! :biggrin_25510: I'll be going back on Tuesday to retake the written test. I realize that the questions on the real thing are probably worded differently than on any practice tests, but I do recall many of the questions/answers being the same for the practice tests I took. Not only that, but it's all the same principals. Would anyone here have any pointers as to what I could do to help pass, and would anyone know of any other good, free CDL practice test websites that I could study on? Thank You!

    Hello:)

    Try this site:

    http://roadwars.com/

This is the practice site that I was referred to while I was in school.

I see that you used the Crist CDL site, this is part of their services.

    IMHO
The CDL manual and Chapter Test at the end of each section would be enough.
Afterall, the 3 test for your permit, are based off this book.

    Maybe you are over-studying???
Just go right back and take it again.

Personally, I studied for 3 days, had to retake the Air Brake test.

Now, go and knock it out, so you can get behind the wheel.

    Best of luck!!!

I can tell you I had a simlar experience with a free CDL test prep site:

    http://www.drivingdirectory.com/CDL/index.php

I clicked on the take the test for your state button, and took a bunch of practice exams. When I got to the DMV and took the actual exam for permit, it bore absolutely no resemblance to the practice tests I'd been taking. Luckily, I had studied the state manual as well and I passed.

The practice exams were so faulty on the website that it actually marked answers incorrect that I had answered correctly, and when it listed the correct answer underneath where mine was marked incorrect, the two actually were identical. I sent numerous emails to the company telling them their grading program was faulty, and their information was not correct for my state. I never got a reply. Lesson learned....you get what you pay for. I suspect your experience, like mine, is very common with the free sites.

Thanks everyone for all of your replies and advice. And thank you Boog, you pointed out something to me that, now that I think about it, I actually did notice too. I went to the link you posted, and picked 50 questions under GK. It's exactly identical to Crist's CDL Page, my first link, hah.

Concerning the faulty tests online, I took a test, and got every question on the page correct. However, the score came back that I had missed one, and when I scrolled down through the questions, the "Correct Answers" were identical to my "Incorrect Answers", as you stated above. The problem could be that, like you said, I'm partly expecting the real thing to be in resemblance to the prep tests. Most of them on the real thing I can say are pretty much identical to the prep tests, in that they're based on the same principals, such as questions on the General Knowledge about losing air pressure & what to do, where to put the emergency cones, driving in fog.. Things like that. Those I got correct on the test. Most other questions on the test preps, like you've stated, are no where near anything on the real thing, although it's also technically the same thing...? Make sense?? :biggrin_25524: lol.

Most of the other ones I got wrong on the real thing, I just had no clue why they were even wrong, lol. It's not like I picked "Just Keep Driving" under "What do you do when your engine bursts into an inferno?", hah. I go back Tuesday to take it again. 2 more tries before I have to pay $13.00 again, and each time it gets easier looking at the real thing and learning which ones were correct. I need to obtain the permit before I can attend school (required). 3rd time's a charm! :biggrin_25525:

what I thought of when reading your post was me and tests. I don't know if this is you, but sometimes, this happens to me. When I go to take a test I go to fast, or, I over-analyze the question and end up with a wrong answer. I think a person can know the answers and still miss them if they don't slow down and make sure they are reading every word. Some tests are so tricky, to me anyway, at DMV. Even for my regular license.

Like I said, I don't know if this might be what is happening but I thought of it because of the way you have studied. Pedal to the metal. I have actually read half the question and answered it in a test because I was so sure:biggrin_2558:

Thank you for this. I realize now that when I went this morning, I had gotten so excited for wanting to pass and get the permit, that I basically did as you said and partly rushed through most of it. I would get to places, read half the question, and put down the answer I thought I knew was correct. On many of them, they were correct, since it would be something I really remembered and it more or less would look like a common sense situation that the question was talking about. On others, I wasn't so lucky, lol. 50 questions on the test, allowed to miss 10.. I missed 14 this morning, so I got closer to my goal of passing than the very first time I failed. I believe it was around 20-something I missed first time, lol. I believe your suggestion, combined with a bit of faulty studying, such as what Boog was talking about, could very well be the root of my problem. I've opened up my PDF manual here on my laptop, and since I don't work during the days & pretty much sit all night # work, I'll have plenty of time until Tuesday to reeaallly study the right way..... Not saying I didn't from the very beginning, hah. Maybe some of those online tests tainted my brain a little?? Thanks so much for the advice guys, it's really helped me realize that maybe it wasn't entirely my fault :biggrin_25523:

Having instructed for Alliance way back in '96 I'll tell you the same thing I told my students AND my oldest son. Do the subsection tests at the end of each chapter as those questions will be the ones you will find on the CDL test. highlight the ones you keep having problems with and WRITE the questions and answers down for those you are struggling with. It's not hard to tell as you go along!

But give you self a break! stay away from the book the day before! Then an hour before you go in recap the tests! Then go in and ACE the test! Quit wasting money you could be saving for those weeks of training with your new company.

I do the same thing when I go in for my renewal. Study the newest book. Take the tests and go pass!
    Good Luck
