One less fool trying to beat a speeding train across the tracks. Feels sorry for the family, not for the driver whom thought he could make it. The train hit his front axle.

    FerrissWheel Thanks this.

    One Locomotive- 125 -150 tons
    One empty car- ~25 tons
    One Loaded car- ~100 tons
Train- ~5000 - 20,000 tons, coal trains usually in the 13,000 ton range

Stopping distance in railroad rulebook- 1.5 miles/7920 feet

Yep, a 13,000 ton train vs. a 40 ton truck is the equivalent of a 40 ton truck hitting a 325 pound man.

    FerrissWheel and speedyk Thank this.

that train was not moving at breakneck speed with all those coal cars. heck, we have all seen how slow those trains are.

    from the article...

so, to stop about 100 yards away, just isn't going that fast.

at about 5:30 AM, the sun could have been in the drivers eyes?

but that would not explain if whether or not he heard any train horns?

i wonder if he was stuck, and panicked and could not get out fast enough?

FerrissWheel and Bud A. Thank this.
