From what he has always told me in the past he never does that. They have vending machines in the one terminal where he can buy a subway sandwich etc. He gets a drink and uses the bathroom in the terminal(s). He has complained that they make him sit and wait at various terminals because the freight isn't ready when it's supposed to be. Often the way it works out he doesn't really have much of a break, if that makes sense. Then he doesn't have much spare time to do anything except drive, what with ltl being so time sensitive. FWIW he has complained that their freight planning leaves a lot to be desired.

that is true of all LTL operations. but as a driver, you always make time for a break.
i never passed by my regular coffee stops. a quick run in, and out, and on the road again.
he is not telling you the whole story
i'm out, good luck to him.
maybe also tell him to come here, and speak for himself?alds and homeskillet Thank this. -
That's typical of most any company on the planning part. When you drive company only thing that changes really is the rate of pay and name on the door. All the other bs is the same.homeskillet and buddyd157 Thank this.

I'm not defending, he knew that I had chatted here before and wanted me to ask for opinions. I appreciate all of them including yours. I can't speak to why he hasn't chatted here himself. He is doing a lot of chatting with a particular girl in his spare time. He is catching up on a lot of things that he missed earlier in his life.

you gotta cut that umbilical cord.
g'bye.flightwatch and homeskillet Thank this. -
I have a suggestion, and it might not be the most ethical one. But given that you are soliciting ideas from the internet, seems to imply that your son doesn't have a bunch of options.
.
Tell your son to find some nail polish remover from Walmart or some rubbing alcohol from a truckstop. With a handfulls of paper towels and some elbow grease, he might be able to remove most or all of the paint. Anything to mitigate the fact that he didn't do a pretrip is only going to favor him.
My friend was in a similar situation a number of years ago. He sideswiped a bollard with his quarter panel. I think we used lighter fluid to remove all the paint. Saved us the headache of waking up the bases' safety office on a weekend.homeskillet and McUzi Thank this. -
He’s toast. Pbbbttt. Little over the top there. Little preachy too. He will be fine.
Speed_Drums Thanks this. -
From my point of view of the overall story, your son will be fine. Tell him not to sweat it. If Estes excrement cans him, there are plenty out there hiring.

Sad thing is, not only did he not do a pre trip, he didn't even do a walk around. Likely approached on the drivers side and didn't even check anything, just hopped in and went.
Sorry, but it doesn't matter how busy one is, there is always time for a walk around to check the lights, tires and damage. His lack of caring about his job and the safety of the motoring public will hopefully get him fired. And from that hopefully he learns to trucking isn't the same kind of job as say retail where cutting corners doesn't hurt more than the single store. He's on a public road, maybe driving next to my wife, he needs to act like it. Trucks are heavy, deadly vehicles and need to be treated as such!Last edited: Nov 12, 2020

Hi, not directing this at you specifically, just replying because this is the last post at the moment. So, over the past year or two he has had to deadline his truck multiple times even though it's relatively new because he spotted problems that could have become serious during his pretrips. If I'm remembering correctly the last one had something to do with a leaf spring thing (sorry, my eyes start to glaze over while he is telling me about this stuff because I don't understand most of it. That book you have to use to study for your cdl was kind of overwhelming). He normally takes the whole pretripping thing very seriously. Who knows what really happened - maybe the bumper ding was already there and he overlooked it and then he himself scraped a curb on the road during his trip that made the yellow marks (?) It does seem to me like it would be hard to miss the yellow scuff marks. I guess we'll find out and the chips will fall where they are supposed to. I am not really as worried as I might have been in years past. Things have a way of working out for the best even though it may not seem like it at any given moment. Not that there's anything wrong with it but knowing him I doubt he'll try to remove the yellow scuff marks. But he hasn't called and he ought to be back on the road at this point, and I'm not calling him, so I guess we'll see what happens....Thanks for putting up with my invading your space. And it was really helpful to know about the bollard thing because I would have had no idea.Last edited: Nov 12, 2020
