I'm getting ready to have a conversation with a previous employer about possibly purchasing a truck through them and leasing on. They do this semi frequently at the owners discretion, but they've been begging me to come back and I've got a good reputation so the odds are in my favor.

Here is the question. Can you help value the truck I want? I need to be sure I'm not totally getting hosed.

It was my company truck until I got done there in the spring.

    It's a 2006 western star 4900fa.
    800k
14l detroit 60 series with pdi turbo, manifold, and ecm set around 600hp. The whole long block was replaced last winter.
    Brand new clutch
    New radiator
    18 speed
    46k rears
    4 way locks
    Herd moose bumper
Very small sleeper. 34" I think?
Everything is mechanically and structurally sound, but the cab does have some rust

The plan would be local/regional heavy haul flatbedding with it

What seems like a reasonable price to pay?

Bear in mind that with the truck I also get to finance repairs through the same company, with loaner trucks if this one goes down. So it comes with a safety net to start

If you're thinking, even for a second, you might be getting hosed then maybe that's your common sense trying to tell you something. Don't ignore your intuition. I wouldn't recommend buying any truck from the hand that feeds you. You'd be in a much better place to get your own truck via your own methods and then taking it to them to lease on with. That way they can't starve you if they decide to punish you for something later down the road.

I don't feel like I'm getting hosed. I haven't gotten a price as of yet or anything. This is a small company with less than 40 trucks and I have a personal relationship with both the owner and the head dispatcher. I've never seen them starve anybody out on a lease yet.

I just want a number to walk in with in mind

What I mean is you already don't trust them to sell you the truck at an honest price because if you did you wouldn't be here asking us. So if you can't trust them at that level; what makes you think you can trust them in the more serious avenues of the business? The truck and driving it is the easiest part of trucking. Once you're in neck deep the real issues begin. As a company guy you can walk away with ease. Not so much when you have thousands upon thousands of dollars in debt hanging over your head. I guess what I'm trying to say is you better think about this as rationally as possible while leaving your emotions at the door. I know you didn't ask for all this and I don't want to push it on you. Just trying to give a heads up in case you haven't read all the horror stories here about lease purchases.

I bought my truck this way, former employer asked if I wanted to buy a truck he was going to sell. I didn't have any financing. We struck a deal like the old sammons lease purchase. I may have paid a little more than it's worth but it's just cost of doing business. I paid it off in 6 months, including some tires, and repairs.

What I'm getting at is, if you trust them and you want a truck, jump in and get to it.

    Samarquis Thanks this.

    I wouldn’t pay over 15k Max

    Truck has rust.
    Small sleeper.
    And it’s a western star.
And it’s ready for an Inframe.

How is it ready for an inframe? The entire engine was replaced last winter.

And I'd take a star over anything else on the road

And I mean replaced. Not rebuilt. Block was eroding around cylinder 5 liner so they got a complete factory reman. When it was my company truck

Then go pay $50k for a truck that’s worth $15k.

    You asked what is worth.

Remember when you go to buy it, it’s the highest in the market.
Go to sale it, no one wants it.
