Difference between IRP plates and regular plates

    I live in Colorado and I'm told I would need an IRP plates to cross state lines. Can I have regular plates and pay at the port of entry or am I barred from ever going across state lines? What's the price difference between regular plates and IRP plates? Thanks in advance

    Permit costs vary.
    3 day IFTA/IRP for Kansas is $75
    TN is $130 because you gotta go through permit service.
