I can't find the link right now but an insurance company did a study and found that experienced drivers are far more likely than new drivers to get out and look when in doubt.
Take pride in and value your safety record more than anything else.

Get Out and Look.
You should feel the opposite of embarrassed. Experienced drivers see a driver get out and look. They think that’s a good driver.
Just realized this morning. Only reason I’m good at blind side backing. I get out and look.
You’re on east coast? You need to get out and look a lot.
Did I say something about Get Out and Look?homeskillet and snowlauncher Thank this. -
Echoing and cheering already said.
If you are not 100% confident where your truck/trailer is during a maneuver, GET OUT AND LOOK! Don't be STUPID!
Maybe you get lucky and succeed and are a hero. Maybe you hit something looking like a f'n moron. The risk vs the benefit, hope the decision is a no brainer! Two options, 50/50 chance, not favorable odds.alds and Mr. EastCoast Thank this. -
If you are unsure about your set up, or not sure how close you are to something, get out and look. That makes you a good driver. Don’t be embarrassed about it. It’s much more embarrassing to hit something.

need to straighten your drive tires at some point so the trailer pivots tightly.
If your setup is correct just remember forward turn right..backing turn left. -
401-Alex, Coffey, OTJBBEERGOGGLES and 1 other person Thank this. -
Getting the correct setup is about 90% of the work. Watch how other drivers set up. If you don't have the setup right it makes it 10x harder
Coffey and God prefers Diesels Thank this. -

If you get out whack pull up straighten it out , it dosent take much to bend a bumper , tear mirrors off.
I never did like a alley dock or the pitch black inside dock with the sun shining in your face. -
It’s your driving/safety record... you don’t look stupid getting out and looking... you look stupid having to call safety and sit in one of those remedial training courses.. even further having to explain these situations to future employers... a correct setup helps, using all the space available to you helps tremendously, and if there’s cars see if you can have them moved... there will be a lot of “well the last driver...” Cut them off immediately and tel them to go and produce the last driver... if it’s a spot that you know you cannot get into whether it’s above your skill level, or cars in the way or whatever reason. Hop in your truck give a fake smile and call dispatch and tell them this isn’t going what do you want to do. Don’t have to be hostile about it
Jesster916 and Mr. EastCoast Thank this.
