I’ve been following these forums for some time now and figured I’d get the best advice from this page. I’ve been a company driver for 14 years and I’m about to make the jump to being an owner operator. I plan to lease the truck that I purchase on with a carrier for the first year before possibly starting my own authority. This will be a one man show, I will not be adding more trucks…just me.
I’m currently back and forth on the type of truck I’m looking for. I’ll be doing local/short haul work, no OTR for me. I’ll be buying a day cab in the 30-40k price range. Something that is universal in its abilities. Something that can pull a dry van as well as a step deck.
The question, and title of this thread. What’s better, buying a pre emission truck or buying a newer truck and getting a tune? I’ve been back and forth between an 03 Pete 379 with a C15 and a 2015 Mack CHU613 that I’ll have to get deleted. One you give up a little comfort but the engine is easier to work on and the other has newer features but more expensive to fix. I’ve heard pros and cons about both. Any thoughts or first hand experience is greatly appreciated.

We can't talk about deletes on here. Unfortunately you'd have to discuss the specifics of that on a forum that allows it.

I’m not trying to be funny, but why a day cab, you never know what may happen, and it’s better to have it and not need it, can get a sit in sleeper about as cheap, won’t be much heavier, you never know if a load comes up where you may have to stay out 1-2 nights a week.

I looked at a few coffin sleepers and some 48”. You’re right, you never really know.

I'd go pre emmissions, you may have to spend a little more but the other route leads to expensive issue if not done right. A month of down time can be a ##### to get steady money coming back in again.

I like pre emissions. I would stay away from day cabs. Get a coffin sleeper. It's nice to be able to lay down when you need to. Get stuck at a shipper/receiver and you can lay down. The weather went to crap and you had to wait it out.....you can lay down. Have mechanical issues and your stuck on the side of the road.....you can lay down. As far as the delete thing goes, if you have to have shops work on your equipment, alot of them won't touch a deleted truck. Something to think about. A pre emissions truck will be constant maintenance because things are at their wear point when you bought it. Everything is going to be wearing out. I have a 99 379 and every time I come home I'm doing something......every time. Alot of the stuff is big ticket items too. If you plan on leasing on to a company, find out what their age restrictions are. I'm independent and it doesn't matter to me. However, it matters if you lease on to a carrier.

thanks for the feedback. It’s a good point that you brought up about the older trucks and things being at their breaking point when purchased. Either way, things will break and need to be replaced. My brother in law is a diesel mechanic so fortunately I have someone on the inside to service the truck when needed. I need to be able to hit the ground running. Can’t afford to buy a project and sink a ton of money into it just to get rolling. I guess buying newer for a first truck is the way to go

Buy a pre-emission truck and avoid all the potential issues that come with a deleted truck.
