If you decide you want IT though, what you need to do is enable everyone around you. You need to be a source of information and share what you know. In addition to navigating the dirty, hairy politics that goes with office work.
Theres always some nerd that knows just as much as you. But will he share what he knows? That's really your job, why you've been paid, to offer your expertise. Don't be insecure about how much you know, or how much someone else knows.
The only thing I really picked up from the politics is to teach yourself right out of a job. Because it won't happen. You are the teacher, right? So no one is going to want you to disappear. You are teaching them. But your students are only 1 step behind you. As rapidly as tech changes, It's a never ending race.
And competition is very stiff.
