Running a small non cdl hotshot setup (yes i know this is what is causing a good amount of the problem for me) i have found a few states that i cant get a load that is even worth operating costs to get me out of the state. My question is when found in this position, what is it you find yourself doing to recoup the week? Next week we are taking a load to Dade City FL and oh boy it looks to be a bit rough on rates for the most part.
any insight to help someone new to trucking stay afloat in these wonderful times of inflation would be great.
What to do for loads when found in a dry State?

Not a hotshot but
Your rates going in need to be high enough to cover deadhead miles back out to a better loading area
You also should figure all miles, I do anyway
So if you need $2 PM for all miles ( just a random number ) then you need to be at $4 going in or at least high enough that you’ll still be at that $2 with whatever added bounce miles you anticipate to get to a better zip code
This is why many guys think they can make $$$$
They never allow for that bounce or figure on any repairs
Once that pops up they go out of business while the next guy enters
It’s a continuous revolving door -
we are usuall getting 3-3.5 pm going into those states, which for a 30' 9000lbs max cargo is good, but we had 3 weeks in a row where we went to texas was seeing rates around .50 a mile it forced us to just gtfo from texas to try and find a better paying load, just didnt know if anyone found it cheaper to wait n pray for a good load. We are still very new, just got authority in january, so we look for any info we can get because we dont want to have the stigma that comes with hotshot, as we plan on going to a stepdeck eventually and building even more from there.

You will quickly figure out which areas have low paying freight
If you watch an area, say phoenix and you see only a handful of loads today
A handful on any other random day then you wouldn’t want to sit because if there’s nothing now it won’t be any better in a day or two
But if you see a fair amount of good loads and a handful of better ones then your odds of finding a better load if you sit a day will increase since you e already watched that area before even going there
Hope that makes sense?
What I did was randomly watch major cities for several days and at different times of the year even though I was t there or going it would give me an idea for what moves and when for those areas
Certain areas might have better pay on a Wednesday or Thursday than other days of the week
Just watch and take notes and in bad areas you’ll know how to figure a rate in and have a better idea on how far you might bounce out -
thank you for the information you've given so far, alot of people in hotshot keep to their own which i get, but at the same time i don't like to watch anyone sink because of lack of knowledge as no one answered questions. -
That service wasn’t a guy named Gary and his brother out in California by any chance was it?
-
no, it was one of those that a factoring company offers, the factoring is great for when we get loads from places with net60 but we leave it at that, as the other services aren't great.

Remember which states are dead spots and don't haul in unless it pays well enough to bounce back out. Same way it works for big trucks.
24kHotshot and GYPSY65 Thank this.
