To those newbies who finished driving school (CDL school) in the past few years.....What did you get out of it besides a CDL and 40 or so hours behind the wheel? To the veteran drivers (those trained the "old school" way)....Do you think the way you had to do it is a better way to put new drivers out there?

I'm also looking into getting into the trucking world. I've looked at the few schools here in Orlando and I'm just not sure that there are any benefit other than you get a CDL. I think the learning comes from on the job training.
I'm just waiting for the spring to sign the dotted line.

Well, the only way, nowadays, that you can learn the 'old school way' is to find someone to teach you all you need to know to pass a CDL test, lends you a truck to take your road test, and gives you a job after.

For newbies, every company that still hires them will want to know which accredited school they went to.

I had to learn on a 5 x 4 transmission and after about 20 minutes, I was on my own. That is a tough way to learn, you either sink or swim within a few days.

    But man do you learn.

I always told my students that the day they stop learning how to drive an 18 wheeler, they had better walk away. You never stop learning.

Not everyone needs the full driving school or the expense hanging over them if the work doesn't suit.

I had lots of experience getting long vehicles around corners without tearing down fences or knocking down posts.

I have handled skids for decades. I knew about stopping, and really only had to pick up the air brake issues.

With a good school you get good instructors who can get you started with being a safe and conscientious driver, and get some insight from others, including others in your class.

My health precluded going to school for an iffy position, but I got a CDL and a few breaks, and I drive; have for 6 years now.

There are other ways, but to start with a big company, school is about the only way to get that foot in the door.

Ouch! Kinda puts you on the hook so to speak. Are you still OK with your decision? I have heard some good things about Roadmaster!

at my school we need to have at least 180 hours behind the wheel before we can even take our CDL test. It's a community college, not a CDL mill. The instructors make sure we're as prepared as possible before we're on the road.

Most companies won't even talk to you as a newbie, unless you have a cert from an accredited school. About your only other choice is to find an O/O or a real small company that would be willing to "take you on to raise." And with insurance the way it is today, I think that would be difficult to find.
