My hazmat renewal is coming up and I'm trying to see if anyone knows how to get the hazmat date to be the same as your license renewal. My hazmat renewal is at the end of July but the license renewal is at the beginning of August. A friend of mine says you have to ask for an extension first, then take the test on your birthday so you can have it on the same day. Is this the only way or is there a way to do so? I'm trying to get everything to be on the same date. It would make everything so much easier.

Yes easier, but it's not going to happen. Your license always expires on your birthday in most states. So when you renew early you license is actually good for a little more than 5 years. But by the Federal regulation, you Hazmat can only be good for 5 years exactly from the date it was issued.CAXPT Thanks this.

ok, so just to be sure from your response, are your saying that it isn't possible to have the hazmat renewal date the same as your license renewal?
-
Here's the problem. You go through a Hazmat TSA check. From the date that is issued, it's good for 5 years. Your license expired on your birthday, but your security clearance must be approved before you take the test. How are you going to synchronize that? You can't. At least you don't have to do like me and pay every 4 years to go through that security check again. I never last the full 5 years I paid for.
So regardless when you take the test...the date of expiration is the date your Hazmat Security check was approved.

ok got it. There's no way of having it the same date.CAXPT Thanks this.

That's right. Of course you could move over here to Arkansas where your CDL is only good for four years and then your problem will be solved. LolCAXPT Thanks this.

Thought I would bump this thread for my question since it’s got good info in it.
I made my online appointment to renew my Texas CDL at a nearby service center. I will also be renewing my Haz Mat. Am I missing a step? Do I need to schedule the written test or will that be done at the service center the day of my renewal? I’m not seeing much on the TXDPS site regarding scheduling of Haz mat renewal. Just all the requirements.
Am I correct in thinking that I will take my Haz mat test on the day of renewal? Then upon completion of the written, they will issue an authorization number which I will use to schedule my fingerprinting?
My last renewal was pre Covid and it was five years ago so I’m needing a quick mental refresh. -
In my state I did fingerprints and they sent the ok to dmv , then you show up and take the test. If you pass they give you a paper temporary license and mail you the hard copy……
Dna Mach Thanks this. -
Yes, when you go and renew, you will take the test. Afterward, yes, you will get instructions on where to go and get fingerprinting done. I did my fingerprinting at my local Identogo.Dna Mach Thanks this.
