The range extender technique has been used by GM and BMW, something similar in a hybrid arrangement would likely be a solution for over the road trucks as pure EV just doesn’t have the range we’d require.

Y’all should check out Edison Motors in Canada. They are a group of truckers and mechanics building a diesel electric tri drive vocational trucks. They crowd sourced the prototype truck and now they are scratch building the first production model.

One of Edison Motors big things is they are trying to use no proprietary parts. They are using off the shelf electronics, batteries, axles, ect. They want to go back to the days where you can repair the truck yourself and get parts relatively easily.dwells40, Gearjammin' Penguin and Lonesome Thank this. -

I always thought replace the big diesel and transmission with one high power electric motor run by a smaller diesel generator connected to a drive shaft to the rear ends. That would keep the electric motor up out of the worst of the road crap. -
I have gotten a positive reputation with folks in the office. My truck still isn't done (parts will be here in the morning), and the planner put me on a load that will be in the yard today that needs to be in Aurora IL on Monday.(2050 miles) It was said in front of witnesses that as hard as I run, I am the only hope to get this there in time. I had an internal smile from ear to ear hearing someone in the front office say that about me to others.

I am kind of irritated at the shop manager right now...all I am waiting on are 4 grade 8 nuts. Volvo delivered the bolts for my motor mount, but didn't include the nuts. I suggested they run down to Lowe's or NAPA and buy 4 grade 8 nuts...the reply I got was "we know what we're doing"...yeah, you sure do, you're making a dollar wait on a dime. I even offered to take the company car and go get them myself, and pay out of my own pocket, but that option was denied. A grade 8 nut is a grade 8 nut, it doesn't have to come from the dealer at an inflated price. I even asked how much trouble I would be in if I just hooked to the load and left, the bolts have been missing for a while, what's a few more miles, she said that wouldn't be a good idea, especially if something happened. Now I have to wait until whenever the nuts get here and get installed so I can run my pecker into the dirt to take care of a customer's needs, all because the manager won't think outside the box and get a truck fixed quicker so it can earn revenue so they can afford to pay her paycheck.
