I need some advice.
I am getting ready to leave Holland and heading to R&L. I already accepted my new position and have a starting date and everything.
So this morning my current TM pulled me into his office and told me he understands why I was leaving (I am the lowest man on the totem pole and first to get layed off again). He then told me he doesn't want to see me go to R&L and that he made some phone calls with the competition the TM at XPO is creating a position for me. All I have to do is apply and let me current boss know so they can pull up my application and get me on board. He said it is better pay and benefits and I would have a better quality experience with the work.
First off I can not believe he would do that for me seeing how I am resigning. Buf I already accepted my new position and they are expecting me to be there in two weeks.
Any ideas what I should do? -
Sounds kinda fishey to me.
You're such a hot shot that they're going to "create a position for me."?
What difference is it to the TM where you go?

Not necessarily BS. There are still some good people in the world that actually recognize a hard worker and appreciate it. Maybe Road Runner peddles freight like nobody’s business and his TM knows it and could be friends with the TM at XPO. I can’t say I would change my plans after I accepted the job, but I most definitely would compare what XPO had to offer with R&L. It never hurts to look at all your options and have a back up plan. Years ago ConWay was at the top of the LTL heap for pay and benefits. I have no idea what they are like today but I would definitely call the TM and find out what he had in mind. Years ago it was 5 years to top pay at ConWay but they may have eliminated that.Mike2633 and road_runner Thank this.

I could see it being genuine, but I see two main problems. First, if XPO is creating an opening just for you, I wouldn't expect them to have a ton of extra work available. If they needed a driver they would have already been trying to hire for it. The second problem is that I don't think XPO is any better than R&L for city work. Especially not at the bottom of the board where you can be forced to cover linehaul runs or even take a linehaul bid.
The only things XPO has going for it in this case is paying OT and providing pallet jacks. For all the other quality of life aspects, R&L seems to do better.Mike2633, road_runner and Opus Thank this. -
At one time, R&L required their drivers to buy their own pallet jacks. Is this still true?
