A friend is swapping cams on an N14 and the gasket that came out of the cam followers were .027 I think, thats it, no shims. does one just put it back the way it was? Ive seen various vids and posts with the 2 dial indicators set up but no one explains what the hell they are doing and such. Anyone know of a PDF procedure on this somewhere?
Engine was rebuilt before he got it so its hard to say if whoever did it, did it correctly then... So would like to verify so timing is perfect... be nice to read a procedure or see it from someone that knows how to communicate... these youtube vids are a joke.
Thanks.

From my non mechanical experience, owning one - yes, the cam follower gaskets determine timing and are important.
Oxbow and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this. -
Keep in mind, you need to reinstall the cam followers just as they came off the block. They can be a few thousands difference in them.
Same cam key being used?Oxbow Thanks this. -
^^^^^ Correct
The majority of the timing is made with the cam key, then is fine tuned with the cam follower gaskets….blairandgretchen, Oxbow and xsetra Thank this. -
You surely have electronic injectors as you only have one gasket and it is a .027. The computer actually times when the injectors fire on those. I always just put them back the the way they were made with no problem.
Step time engines are another subject.
I found an N14 complete shop manual on line in a PDF. It was free.High Stepper, Oxbow and HoundDog7 Thank this. -
OLDSKOOLERnWV and BoxCarKidd Thank this. -
Pittsburgh Power has a good You Tube on timing a N14 mechanical. The timing tool is on line for about $900.00.
Quickserve is a great resource as xsetra said. Do that in your friends name. You only get a few free CPL look ups.
I am sure there is a timing spec for jig timing an electronic engine but I never did that. There probably is. Just always put them back the way they were. -
Ok…. If he is pressing the cam gear off the old cam and reinstalling the on the new camshaft…. MAKE SURE THE KEY ALIGNING THE GEAR ON THE CAMSHAFT GOES BACK TURNED JUST AS IT WAS ON THE OLD CAMSHAFT….
That key adjust the majority of the injector timing, the gaskets in the cam followers fine tune the adjustment….Oxbow and Big Road Skateboard Thank this.
