No argument there. I’m used to it though after having done for this long, 8 years now on the current run.

Most guys get terrified at the idea of driving 100+ miles to the first of an 18 stop peddle, but typically on a good day with the way my routing’s been going I can knock that out 3 - 3 1/2 hrs or so, starting pickups by noon, and headed home by 1:00-1:30.

BUD: "Hal, I need a new fuel solution."

HAL9000: "Bud, you departed from the original route solution. Fuel in Moriarty, then drive through the Tonto National Forest to the consignee."

BUD: "I can't do that, Hal. It doesn't make sense."

HAL9000: "This is the best solution, Bud. I'm trying to help us achieve mission success."

BUD: "Hal, have you heard of Devin Williams? He disappeared in the Tonto National Forest. I need a different fuel solution."

HAL9000: "I'm sorry, Bud, I can't do that. Fuel in Moriarty."

[HAL'S RED LENS WATCHES BUD'S LIPS AS HE TALKS ON THE PHONE.]

BUD: "Mission Control, I need fuel in Tucumcari or Santa Rosa. Hal insists on Moriarty but I'm not going that way."

FUEL DESK: "Oh yeah, I see that. Devin Williams disappeared along Hal's route solution. I can give you 60 gallons in Tucumcari but then Hal still has you going to Moriarty."

    [NEXT MORNING, ALAMOGORDO]

BUD: "Hal, I need a new fuel solution."

HAL9000: "Bud, I have a fuel solution in Las Cruces."

    BUD: "Thank you, Hal."

Here in south GA, we had peddles that had 2-3 hours of stem time to the first stop.
We had a regional manager that wanted everything delivered by noon. With our inbound arrivals hitting as late as 9am, I told the dude, "that's simply not going to happen."
Which has a lot to do with why I was invited to resign. One of the happiest days of my life.

Oh, and he eventually was promoted to either president or vice president of FedEx freight. His award winning personality turned at least 4 centers union (one of them was the one he was manager of when he first started with the company).
Then HE was invited to resign.

Fortunately we finally wised up at our terminal. The distant runs have been added an extra day of transit time and now we start at 6:00.

That was one of the best decisions they ever made.

Situations like yours where you cover territory like that and trying to get everything out same day is not only insane, it’s impossible.
