Another suggestion: spend the extra money -- and get the version/edition with the LAMINATED PAGES.

Then you can use erasable ink (with different colors) on the pages.....for trip-planning &/or making/adding notes.

    Works great....:D

That's how I did it when I started - 2004. look at the route, write down a list of all the exit numbers and highways. Call the receiver and push 3 for "directions from the west". Might take me 2 hours on a Friday afternoon trip planning before leaving with a North East multi stop.

Check low height clearances in the front of the book. Set sail.

This was before the GPS era.

    That is a valid point.

But do the best research you can to begin with, so if anything goes sideways, you can at least say you did your thang.

The decline in sales of that paper atlas, the rise of GPS sales, well - here we are.

But these two are willing to learn the right way, so there's always hope.

    Each one, teach one.

    Well
You deserve some credit for seeing the bridge and thinking .
    and stopping

correction , you deserve a LOT of credit for seeing it and thinking :”uh, that’s bridge looks kinda low , I dunno if we can fit under that “

90% of drivers would have noticed it AFTER they hit it .

I’ve called the police before to ask for traffic control if I have to back out into a busy road .

I can’t imagine they would give a ticket unless you were on a road that was marked as NO TRUCKS

    I’d just tell the officer
“thanks for coming out , I’m sorry to call you guys out for this , but we gotta back out into this traffic and if you guys can stop the cars for a minute, we will be on our way , we just don’t want any accidents if it can be avoided “

but having a spotter along for the ride is nice , , a reflective vest and a orange flag helps alot too .

and I love my Nitecore P-10 flashlight .
Fits in your pocket and is super bright .

most officers I’ve had to call out were friendly and said they would rather stop traffic for two minutes than sit at an accident scene and fill out forms for two hours .

but ya never know , they are people to and you could encounter one that’s an ahole.

I’ve heard that from others before. Myself many many years ago called them and the officer was real good about everything. He said they had many drivers hit that bridge and agreed that we need more signs/warning. Apparently he was there for a few hours just the day before when one rammed themselves under it and he was delighted that I didn’t do the same thing.

    My question is this.

Why is he roaming around east of the 35 in the first place? At max height.

Personally I would’ve googled the non-emergency number for the police department in town and had them come out. The stories about tickets are likely just lunch counter talk. It worked out for you the way you did it, but one inattentive driver could’ve really ruined your day.

I had to back out of a delivery in NH once. It was about a mile back out to the highway. The road I was on had little traffic but I knew there was no way I was getting back out onto the main highway. So I called the cops. They knew where I was when I said I needed assistance. They were parked along the highway by the time I got there and stopped traffic for me so I could back out. They thanked me for calling instead of trying to do it on my own.

Only problem calling the police department directly is getting someone to answer. Smaller departments don’t have someone manning a desk 24/7 and the call isn’t auto directed to another phone or even an officers cell phone. My township never answers. There are a few I have called directly and got nothing.
