I have a 1998 detroit 60 12.7. It came back smoking far worse than I'd ever ever seen. I changed an injector with one i knew was used but good. which solved the problem of contant smoking. Then a day later 2 more injectors went down so I put in a six pack. I changed cam sensor top n bottom. Truck still started hard and smoked white smelled like diesel and burned your eyes. New injectors helped crazy good. Yet still smoked heavy at started up.. Now it smokes at start up and then after it's running it has a faint smell but 0 smoke. It will smoke again if you shut it off letting it sit off for n hour. It wont smoke if its sitting for half hour. It will go away after a few minutes after starting it again. Oil pressure is between 50 n 54 always at highway speed when pulling a load. Plenty of power. It does run rough and like a new engine at idle. Fuel pressure is good too. I put in new head gasket. I secured the cups with one seemed odd i locked it back down.. It looses no antifreeze anywhere. I do smell coolant at times but very very brief oulling heavy load.. 700 thousand on current build. Fuel pump replaced by me. Water pump replaced by me. Turbo replaced by me. A fuel check valve seemed odd eg dirty. I looked at that just now. Might cause rough running but smoking not sure. Some blue in white smoke but it goes away snd sometime no blue with white smoke. All this came out of nowhere. I guess I didn't check for air getting into the system yet. I did do an oveehead twice. I'm a bit perplexed as to where to go next. I'll check the temp of cylinders at a cold start. Maybe got a cylinder going bad i guess. I usually whip smoking issues quick but not this one. Mick

Did you use the graphite crush washers on the bottom of the injectors? Chances are the cups seats are beat up. Fuels dripping into one or more cylinders. Should have replaced them while the head was off. Using the crush washers will fix it, if that’s the problem. A visual inspection of the cup seats will usually show any damage. Usually a half moon looking impression mark, caused by the injector pounding on it as the tip opens and closes.

What was the serial number of the injectors you put in?
-
Could be the timing is off, could be the front gear on the crankshaft that runs all the other parts. The older series 60 Detroit engines need to be maintained. Most of them lock up when the timing gear messes up. It is called the Bull Gear

Reason I ask is that I've just gone through an issue with injectors.
I had a 6 pack go in last year - dealer supplied the wrong ones. Performance weak all year till mechanic pulled invoice to discover . . .
They supplied R5235580. These are for an 11.1 S60.
Should have been R5235575 - for a 12.7.
I installed R5235915 upon reccomendation from another forum member - the power is back for sure, but it stumbles on startup, cold start is terrible. I tuned the ECM a few years back with the 5575's in there, I'm thinking it may need a tweak with the 5915's that are in now. Oil sample does not show fuel dilution or anything odd - so far.
There is another one - R5237650 - I think it's for a marine application?
My engine is a GK60 for reference - 1995 production year.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Are you running a stock File or a tuned file in the ECM ?Rideandrepair and blairandgretchen Thank this.

My 99 BK has 7650s. They’re 9 hole, instead of 6 hole nozzles.blairandgretchen Thanks this.

hey my truck acts just like yours 98 12.7 ,smokes like crazy until coolant warms up which is forever, cold start is scary lol but after is settles it sounds super nice,it also smokes outta crank case vent tube all the time although i think thats vapor, its just how they are made i dont think there is anything wrong with it
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
If it’s ever been overhauled, and they did the required LoNox programming. It will smoke excessively at cold start, till it warms up. A lot of smoke. The fix is to rebuild it with the higher compression pistons. Yours is probably an mk, pk, or ?? Whatever. Use a bk kit next time it’s overhauled. The cold smoke doesn’t hurt it. It’s due to the timing changes of the LoNox program. It’s as if it’s over fueling. Once it’s warmed up, fuel burns efficiently. The BK engine also has different injectors. 9 hole instead of 6 hole.Supposed to atomize better being a finer spray. Cam is another choice at overhaul. Not sure about all that. Lots of opinions there. Search this forum. There’s a lot of info. Different opinions. I’ve heard the older 6 hole injectors are more responsive. I’ve had both, one 98 PK, and now have a 99 BK. I can’t tell any difference, except the older PK got a little bit better mpg. About .3 better. Not sure why. I hear a good custom tune will fix just about any problem. Also increase power and fuel economy. Then others have problems like rough idle, or engine misses. Lots of different experiences and opinions. It’s all on this forum. Just search 12.7.Last edited: Dec 3, 2023

I got 60K on a out of frame rebuild. Mine smokes at start up. I got pretty good blowby. Put a hose on to get it away from the vents and out towards the rear. Was taking in a lot of fumes. I also think I have some injector issues. Found a good shop so he is going to check it all. Also sending out ECM for a tune. Well, since DCS is in Pittsburgh I will hand deliver it to Fernando.
Rideandrepair and Big Road Skateboard Thank this.
