Yeah, jb hunt was my second company briefly, and that was in 2005. They paid me 42cpm back then, but maybe all the accessory pay makes up for it. They are calling me today, I'll get more info and the exact numbers. Sounds like low pay for 2024 though.

Hope they pay you big money, just about every rail yard in Chicago is in ghetto slum neighborhoods. Nothing worse than getting a flat or breaking down on 47th street at 0200.

Just think if the job really paid good, would they have any openings? :biggrin_25512:

Write the info and the name of the people you are talking to down in a notebook so you don't have to guess

I highly recommend you do your own calculations. Because there is absolutely no way in H E double L you’ll come close to $86K a year as a local driver in Chicago area, or any other area for that matter, at $0.40 a mile.

I can’t tell you how many recruiters have called me promising pie-in-the-sky. None, ABSOLUTELY none of them, bothered to do the math before quoting ridiculous pay targets.

For example, an OTR salary of $96,000 a year in a truck governed at 65 mph averaging 2800 miles a week at $.60 a mile is ridiculous.

Figuring home time at 1 day in for every 6 out you’ll run 44 weeks out of the year. That gives you 134,400 miles for the year. That translates to $73,920. So $96,00 minus $73,920 is a shortage of $22,080. To make up the difference one would need to average 12.54 additional stops a week at $40 per stop to make $96,000.

There is absolutely no way anyone running 65 mph is going to average anywhere 12.54 stops a week and still run 2800 miles a week.

That’s an OTR example and OTR is generally the highest paying sector.

Now that’s the best case scenario. As such I wouldn’t expect 2800 miles a week average I’d guess at that speed 2500 would probably be more realistic.

    YMMV

That's exactly what I thought, the moment they mentioned the payscale... that's basic math, and after 20 years, I've seen a lot of trucking payscales. I feel that I'd be averaging close to 50mph with this run, that's only $20/hr while in motion. You got to keep in mind that the max speed for 30 is 60mph, with a lot of places 50 and under. JB hunt has cameras in their trucks so I'd probably go slower yet just to keep the thing from looking at me at all. There's a vice inside telling me that I'm missing something about the pay, but after watching the job ads like a hawk the last few weeks, I've noticed that payscales are dropping for a lot of companies everywhere.

Don't worry about going under any posted speed limits. They don't even bring it up until you're 10 over, and you'll get warnings before they send you packing. I got called out for going 64 on a 50 in Milwaukee and it wasn't a big deal. No actual consequences. Now I make sure to stay under 59 on that stretch of road. The baby monitor sucks for sure, but don't let it slow you down.

Which is another reason against me leaving my company to go to work as a company driver somewhere else. My company doesn’t nag us over that sort of stuff. Never once have I gotten a call like that though if they monitored us I’d get a dozen calls a day. Basically as long as we arrive on time for our pickups and deliveries they leave us alone.

They do care about points because it affects the company’s score. Since my MVR is clean they aren’t concerned. Also, I have prepaid legal, but I’ve never had to use it.

I’ve had a few people call and report me for this or that. Each time our safety officer called and asked for my side of the story. Each time he was basically like, “Ok no problem, you’re good.”

But then again, we’re not a mega carrier either.
