I received a DUI in Hawaii 16 years ago. I'm now trying to get a Class B license in Florida to drive a delivery truck. Will that DUI appear on my record? If so, will it be a barrier to get a job?

You're good.....16 years ago is more than enough time. Most companies look between 3 to 5 years

Yes, up to 75 years on your record in FL :)

Florida is the US’s North Korea in regards to the penal code and general oppression.

    I did not mistype..it’s 75 years not 7.5 or 5-7

The short answer is "no, it will not prevent you from getting a job".

Some companies will not hire anyone who EVER had a DUI.

Other companies are not as picky.

"Will it appear on my record?"

Well, that depends on how far back they want to check.

I found out through personal experience last year that the information is out there somewhere, and a company can go back as far as they want if they're willing to pay for the data.

They were asking me about places I worked 25 years ago.

    I didn't get the job.

Your DUI is probably not on your DMV record, but you should check to make sure.

Also, answer ONLY WHAT IS ASKED on the application. Example:

"Have you had a DUI in the last 15 years?"

    CORRECT ANSWER: "No".

INCORRECT ANSWER: "No, but I had one 16 years ago".

See how that works? Don't talk yourself out of a job.

Good luck, and let us know how you made out.

Disregard my first reply..reading comprehension can be a battle for me at times :)

Hawaii it only stays on your record for 5 years.

Any job that requires you to cross into Canada will be off limits, but you should be good in the US.

If the job application asks "have you EVER had a DUI" then a 16 year old DUI WILL matter.
If the job application asks "have you had a DUI in the last X years" (and X is less than 16) then a 16 year old DUI will NOT matter.
Don't lie, but only answer the question that is asked. They didn't ask for your life story. They asked A QUESTION. They need THAT QUESTION answered truthfully. Don't play the game of lying because you don't think they will find out. That's how you get fired on the spot a few weeks or months after you get hired. It sucks to be told to get out of the truck in a strange city and only have a few minutes notice to get out and get your stuff home.

And @TripleSix is right. A DUI is likely going to keep you out of Canada, but most US truck drivers NEVER go to Canada.

16 years ago? You're fine. The farthest back I've ever seen companies look back is 7 years.

Yes and no. Be up front and honest, let the employer make the call. Usually they will not worry too much if there has been a number of years since and there hasn't been any other alcohol/drugs or even near misses with controlled substances.
I would not hesitate to apply anywhere but you HAVE to be honest. Good luck!

    Question, Wolfhound by any chance?

He should go down to the DMV and pull up his record to see if it's still there. It should have fallen off by now, but it's always good to check. Some states like Florida allow you to check online, so that might be an option as well. If it shows up mention it, if not, then don't.
