That’s not entirely true. It depends on where they live and what they’ll be using it for.

 

If you remove the commercial hitch and replace it with a RV 5th wheel hitch and the weight of the vehicle loaded is less then 26,001 pounds. Most states will let you register it as a truck. You will still have to pay attention to scale signage. If it states all vehicles over 10000 pounds must weigh that’d be you. That is why people place “personal RV not for commercial use” on the doors. It lets the port of entry officers know you are not commercial.

Any use for any commercial purpose makes it a commercial vehicle. According to the DOT, that includes pulling your horse trailer to a rodeo where you might win something.

 

For several years I drove a private bus for a company, never kept a log, never crossed a scale, never was required to take a DOT physical(although the company required it) and you want to know how we got by? The bus was registered in North Carolina as a RV. Now, as far as being used for business, it certainly was. The bus was used to entertain customers and for the executive staff to travel in.

I get people get away with it, we have farm trucks taking loads on load boards here, they have been busted for by the state a few times and one has been bold enough to continue to do it under HOS exemptions.

 

Could been "illegal", but several trips I remember, we would go to D.C. and entertain a "top brass" with the FMSCA and a few trips to Raleigh, NC for the CEO to have tea with the Governor. When I accepted this job, I was told by the CEO, "never worry about a traffic ticket, I will pay the fine and I have enough "clout" that no points will ever be put on your DMV."
