I have a friend that has a 98 Peterbilt 379 with the factory original 6067BK60 12.7L Detroit set at 500hp. It runs great and had an in-frame done about 90-100k ago. The truck runs a tad hot (200 degrees) on the water side and doesn't smoke a drop. The turbo, injectors, and components all check out good. It showed good on a cylinder cut out test, too. It wouldn't hardly smoke even when a tuner tried turning up the fuel. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm leaning towards the mufflers being stopped up. Is there anything else we should check? It's really got us puzzled and scratching our heads.

Maybe I'm not getting it, but I am scratching my head wondering why you want to smoke. I've got a 6NZ with a 650 file in it I can't make it smoke but it runs really good.
Jordonh, Rideandrepair and Sons Hero Thank this. -
He's not necessarily wanting it to smoke, but we know similar models smoke some. I mean not a drop, when I say no smoke. It almost feels held back a bit. I've never seen a 12.7L that didn't smoke. It feels like a sensor is bad or something isn't quite right. There's no miss, stutter, or anything when it's running.Rideandrepair Thanks this.

If it has the original radiator I would replace it. You can try and clean it but it is probably too dirty. Had a guy that had a Freightliner Classic that was doing the same thing. New radiator and he said the fan hardly ever came on after that.

Put it on a dyno!Rideandrepair and AModelCat Thank this.

That might be the next route he takes. We're trying to exhaust all possibilities first.
I think the radiator is okay. We're leaning towards stopped up mufflers on the heat issue.Rideandrepair and Deere hunter Thank this. -
What kind of manifold pressure does it push, and what is your parameter running? I don't think radiator or water temperature would have anything to do with the mufflers but you can tell real quick if you have a air air leak or if you have any kind of an exhaust problem by your perimeter and your manifold pressure

First check it’s not blowing bubbles and just beginning to have a head gasket problem. Check it at idle, then at 1800 RPMS, believe me it happens sometimes unfortunately. Then maybe always disconnect the long flex pipe at the elbows. It’ll be loud. Run it out. Mufflers could be rotted out. Take one off shake it. You’ll hear it rattling if it’s crumbling inside. Rattling? Replace them regardless. Radiator or one stuck thermostat. Radiator plugged, it’ll get a lot hotter under a load and/or hill. Oil/water difference should be 20 degrees, check that too. That’s all I know to do before spending money chasing a demon. Maybe I’m wrong, but clogged mufflers on any engine, it’s going to big down the higher RPMs and longer you run it. Rule out air filters of course. the CAC, and all hoses, including the one from air compressor to intake manifold.

You're assuming it's OK? How old is it? Can you see light through the fins?
You want smoke? Put a hole in a CAC hosebeastr123, Feedman and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
What temperature thermostat is in it? I have almost same set up, with 180 thermostat - it stays right there.
New stacks and air filters are fairly cheap. I put 7” Lincolns on mine and it lowered pyro temps, and sounds better. Smokes on start up and cold.
Mine is GK - not BK.Rideandrepair Thanks this.
