Is it a big deal if I log out of my ELD and drive a few miles to avoid an HOS violation?

Will you be out of hours entirely when you stop for your break? If not, take 8 hours, do the delivery, then take 2 hours.

The split sleeper rules are your friend!

No do not shut your ELD off. Do a 8 - 2 split instead. Call your log department for step by step instructions on your ELD model.

After you reject it, the mechanics have to claim that time on their account. You can't just reject it and expect it to go away.

Also, your logs will show that you shut down at one location and restarted at another location. It will be pretty obvious to anyone checking.

What do you mean by big deal? I suspect you want to know about the consequences. We don't know your company's policy, people, habits.

The big danger of falsifying logs happens if you get in a crash and lawyers discover you have falsified your logs. Getting to the customer and not getting a DOT ticket is just one danger. Later in the day and days later if someone hits your truck or you hit them, and a lawsuit happens, your creative log entries might be discovered.

You can also use PC to Restaurant or Entertainment, if you company lets driver use PC. So could getup in the morning and PC to that Restaurant you like 10 miles away that open at 7am. Then after eating and you 10 hour break is finished you can go make delivery couple miles away or the same town. If you have to driver around at Restaurant while parking just make sure you stay in PC before moving truck

Don’t do it…. If you get inspection they will see exact location where you went off duty and appeared on duty the next day…. It’s easily noticed by the DOT that you appeared online 50 miles from the place you went off duty…. I was questioned in Montana because cell phone signal bounced between towers while I was doing my reset..

Honestly when I started driving I would stress like crazy over appointments and crap like that…. Now I just don’t give a flying F about it… if I’m late than I’m late… of course I hustle and always plan the trip…. However you can’t have a perfect schedule 100% of the time. Many times brokers are being cheap and they don’t get a truck till last minute… don’t stress yourself
