We use to move empties like that too...and occasionally you would pass another empty going back the other way. We were told that when we were moving glass from one plant to the other, it was because the other plant was producing a different size glass and they had a shortage of inventory for the size we were bringing in and it was cheaper to bring it over from another plant rather than retool the production line for a limited run.

There's always a good reason. At Gauthier's here their biggest customer was the LU biscuit and cake empire. Many many times we carted cakes from here in the SW to the NE, only to back load some more going the other way. And if I was sent to England, I never, ever backloaded, it was always hotfoot back to the ferry to load butter or something going to a place where they made butter. Happily I was paid by the hour, so no skin off my nose.

Spent 2+ hours yesterday afternoon, and used most of a 8 oz can of adhesive fixing all the holes on the worst tarp Toledo gave me. It looks like a patchwork quilt. The other tarps aren't nearly as 'holy'. I could have dropped it off at Wichita and picked up a replacement, but that's a crapshoot... sometimes they have tarps available, sometimes they don't. I figured that getting it fixed and being ready to go tomorrow was a safer bet than taking a chance of them not having a good replacement and having to fix it at the shipper. I also have some cheap plastic drop clothes I plan on using on the load just in case I missed a hole.

Different times but the last time I did flatbed work, must have been in the '70s, we kept our own sheets all the time and looked after them, no nasty surprises. If we changed trailers they got dropped on the catwalk of the unit ready for the next one. With all the space you have on your tractive units in the States I am surprised that that isn't preferred.

Can't work out what T-call is but I am guessing it is when you load a trailer and somebody else, for whatever reason, is going to deliver it. I suppose that must have happened to me but I can't ever remember it. We did change trailers at Midland Storage, but very rarely and at the heavy haul company, Econofreight, it was frequent but sheets, sorry tarps, were rarely used on those jobs and the reason for change would be for a special job say from 40' to 60' to 70' or a low loader of some sort.

My company calls them relays. We do it if we cant make the appointment on time, are running ahead of schedule so we drop to keep running, or it may be to get you to the house so you dont have as much deadhead miles

As far as keeping tarps on the deck behind the sleeper, my truck doesn't have the wheel base for 3 tarps, even with my 5th wheel slid back. Our 2023 aluminum trailers have 1 side box, but 3 - 8' drop tarps are a tight squeeze. Our 2024 aluminum trailers have 2 side boxes, so 3 tarps fit better. All our trailers before 2023 didn't have any side boxes, so your tarps had to strap to the deck. -
I see, thanks for the explanation. The problem with having someone give you rolled up tarps in exchange for the tarped load you have left, is you don't know how many holes you have been gifted 'till you unroll them. As you have seen.
BTW I was amused when you said 'oversize driver' but only briefly, when I remembered that 'oversize' is what you have flagged front and back with a load that is bigger than normal.
In Britain the equivalent sign would be 'Abnormal Load' and I'm not sure I, or any of my former mates would appreciate being described as 'abnormal'.wulfman75, hotrod1653, Knucklehead and 5 others Thank this. -
Ok, ok, I hope I haven't broke the unspoken rule of flatbedding...this is the 3rd day in a row I have managed to take a shower.
