No it’s not. The days of longshoremen doing anything real physical labor have been gone since the invention of the shipping container. (Which they objected to also). Today they mostly ride in a crane, spotter truck, forklift, pickup truck, or office chair.

This i think will cause drastic changes in society. As people are replaced and become idle because they did not plan/prepare for their job elimination. Many will simply expect to be taken care of, and do little to adapt...... lets just call that "soylent green"

Automation isnt an issue, and contrary to your opinion that it should never replace, no, it absolutely ought to.

Laying the problem at any biggest cause of problems, i would say the PACE of that change everywhere is the issue.

I’m neither for nor against unions, but I have seen firsthand what your Dad said.

Mainly in aerospace, but back to ports when I delivered papers there as a kid.

It seemed that their goal was to expend as much time as possible, at the expense of expediency. Not the best business partnership for an independent truck driver.

Like I mentioned, careful for what you wish for!
And I disagree with your belief of automation should absolutely replace jobs. Humans first bud, if not I guarantee you're not gonna like what kind of world follows that.

I feel it is wrong for the union to order the port/employers not to automate. If the Union wants to purchase the company and then determine not to invest in automation, have at it.

    From HBR:
This is a lie. Not only is it a lie, it's one told for the purpose of fostering class warfare sentiment. Most Americans are indeed participating via their retirement investments, and I'm sick and tired of progressive writers and media figures advancing the narrative that the stock market is a good-old-boys club that is unavailable to ordinary Americans.
