Intersting.. For all of you who have gotten spots.. My recruiter said she has me booked for May 18th, and I havent sent in anything yet.. She hasnt even verified employment for me, or sent me for a physical.. I do have my permit, and DOT physical already though, but I thought these companies always sent you for another one.. I'm suppose to take my cdl test this Fri, or Sat.. :p

Just because you are booked for orientation doesn't mean you are hired. They will verify employment and send you for a physical when you are at orientation. If anything falls through, then they just send you home.

Have they checked your MVR, etc. yet? As I recall, I gave them permission to check my MVR as part of the application. They checked my MVR from Mississippi and from New York even though I haven't had the NY license since 1995. I've had several background investigations done over the last several years since 9/11 for different employers, one of which was the federal government. I have a DOT med card that's good through Oct of this year. I do need to ask them if I should go ahead and get it renewed now. I can do that through my current employer or go to a Concentra clinic in New Orleans.
I think recruiters get a sense of an applicant's employability from the application, e.g., did the applicant answer "No" to all the questions that the recruiter/employer likes to see answered "No" to, i.e., no "explanations" required? Did the applicant fill out the application in full?
In my case, they can be fairly certain that I can pass the written part of the CDL A permit exam because I have a Class B so I've passed the General Knowledge portion before.
Still, there are no guarantees, stuff happens. Unfortunately, some stuff is discovered once the student gets to the school or a new hire driver gets to orientation. It's the nature of the beast. It's not like going for an interview at a factory, corporate office, district office, retail store, etc. that is commuting distance from someone's home.
Best of luck to you! Hope everything falls right into place!

Technically they are suppose to have everything verified before they send you to orientation, however that isn't always the case. At least that's what my recruiter told me. I'm suppose to call her Thursday to see if everything is a go for Monday. I'm looking forward to it!

I believe the only thing they will check prior to setting you up for orientation is your MVR. Everything else (ie employment verification, background check) is done after setting up an orientation date. They start checking all that a week before you start.

I'm going to the academy at Millington. The recruiter I'm dealing with has verifications of employment, signed by me, to be sent out to my current and past employers. I'm confident there will be no problems. It seems strange, if not bad business practice, to place obstacles in the way at orientation. Particularly obstacles that could have been dealt with before the fact. However, that's apparently the way it's done so it must work out well for the employer.

I know what you mean. You would think the company would want to get all that out of the way before orientation, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It could be that they've had such an influx of new drivers that they just don't have the time to get everything done. I know they are very busy. My recruiter called me twice yesterday simply because she forgot she'd already called me. I had to laugh, because i heard her whisper "what an idiot" to herself.
