    Hello Everyone
I am in the process of hiring my cousin to drive my 26ft foot box truck for my trucking business in California. I am planning to pay him Percentage Per Load, but am a little overwhelmed on all the process. Is there any business that could help me setup or guide me on hiring my first employee. Your guidance is appreciated

    Flat Earth Trucker Thanks this.

To hire workers in California, employers must register as an employer with the Employment Development Department (EDD), comply with state and federal labor laws, and adhere to specific requirements regarding new hires, payroll, and documentation. This includes providing required forms and notices to employees, verifying their eligibility to work in the US, and complying with reporting requirements.
    1. Register as an Employer:
    • Register with the California Employment Development Department (EDD) to comply with payroll taxes.
    • Apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS.
    2. Understand California Labor Laws:
    • Familiarize yourself with California's specific labor laws, which may differ from federal laws.
    • Review laws related to minimum wage, overtime, leave, and discrimination.
    3. Create a Job Description:
    • Develop a clear and concise job description outlining the responsibilities and qualifications for the position.
    4. Recruit and Interview:
    • Advertise the position and screen resumes.
    • Conduct interviews, adhering to legal guidelines and asking job-related questions.
    5. Offer and Onboard:
    • Provide a formal job offer letter outlining the terms of employment.
    • Complete necessary paperwork, including Form I-9 for employment eligibility verification, W-4 for federal tax withholding, and DE 4 for California tax withholding.
    • Provide employees with required notices and forms, such as those related to wage theft, discrimination, and domestic violence leave.
    6. Payroll and Taxes:
    • Set up payroll and comply with California's tax withholding requirements.
    • Report new hires to the EDD within the required timeframe.

    ADP can handle payroll...

You're gonna need a Federal EIN and whatever the state requires also.

Is your box truck over 26k lbs?

Need to go ahead and pay Fed HVUT for the year, now (550$) per vehicle.

CPA to handle workers comp and state local and fed taxes.

I've had good luck with Bank of Ameerica for a business account.

    Get a DUNS number, immediately.

Insurance will be tricky, and expensive.

I hope your cousin is cool taking home a few hundred a week while on the road.
