That's solid advice. We set ourselves up pre-retirement. Small overhead, steady monthly income/union, ss,ect. Everything paid for. Wife drives a Ford escape, good little town car. My pt job gives me pocket change & get out of the house.
What if it Snows?

Fund a house roof, and a paint job with a 3 yr CD as probable expense. Draw on it for A/C, appliance repair.
4% compound interest is the greatest wealth builder ever devised.homeskillet, Dale thompson, 4mer trucker and 9 others Thank this. -
You can do it if you plan ahead and be somewhat disciplined. I retired a few years ago when I could draw full SS benefits, my Wife retired about 6 years ago with a gvmt retirement after 40 years. She cannot draw SS account of never working enough quarters to qualify, account of always working under the gvmt system. All our stuff and property is paid for, however we don’t live extravagantly by nature. Our new vehicle is a pristine 2006 Silverado we use to leave out of town in when we must, Her daily driver is a 2000 4 Runner with 240k on it, mine is a 99 Silverado with 338k on it. Have various other trucks, tractors and such around. We don’t travel do other outlandish things just pretty much stay on the place. I maintain a private machine shop and a shop with medium/heavy truck repair capabilities and drive a dump truck for a guy locally to stay honest, as long as my health will tolerate, which may not be very much longer.
One of the best Blessings we have been awarded, is the fact we have raised two Sons that when they got old enough to leave home they did it when they were prepared. Have never caused us one minit of grief, a lot of worry but not grief, have been self sufficient entirely and built their own productive Families. That alone is worth a hell of a lot of money and many people have not had this luxury, as well as good health up until recently.Friend, homeskillet, ElmerFudpucker and 12 others Thank this. -

But, that's the hard part.......figuring out what to do with all that time on your hands. It's pretty easy for me because I'm naturally lazy. I passed on a couple of really, really good job offers because when I thought about it, I was like, "Nah......ain't feelin' it'"
It's funny......you spend your whole life working, and then all the sudden you're not. The Hazul does volunteer work and whatnot so it keeps her out of my hair a lot. I just basically manage the house and the money and take care of The Hazul. It's honest work, but it's different than having a job.
Just think about where you'll be and what you'll be doing if and when you retire. (Naps are a bonus).Friend, homeskillet, Dale thompson and 11 others Thank this. -
I have said: If it had not been for the good family name at home, I would never have worked a day in my life. It is so easy to separate other people from their money...Dale thompson, 4mer trucker, IH9300SBA and 9 others Thank this. -
They’ll be in for another awakening.Last edited: May 29, 2025
