That's solid advice. We set ourselves up pre-retirement. Small overhead, steady monthly income/union, ss,ect. Everything paid for. Wife drives a Ford escape, good little town car. My pt job gives me pocket change & get out of the house.

Other half wants to go another couple years— her SS comes pretty close to mine and she got a pretty good pension built up so I could do it — summers and hunting season would be easy to stay occupied— it’s the stretch between January and April that bugs me

Takes all kinds, Judge. In this situation, just do your part. You are responsible for you and others for themselves. Small consolation now as you struggle, but when the dust settles, you will be content and others will be still having worries. I could cite you cases in detail.

So one scenario.. Take it, apply all to house and buggy pay on out meanwhile. All slick, things stable, re assess ...
Fund a house roof, and a paint job with a 3 yr CD as probable expense. Draw on it for A/C, appliance repair.
4% compound interest is the greatest wealth builder ever devised.

    Exactly this ^^^^^
You can do it if you plan ahead and be somewhat disciplined. I retired a few years ago when I could draw full SS benefits, my Wife retired about 6 years ago with a gvmt retirement after 40 years. She cannot draw SS account of never working enough quarters to qualify, account of always working under the gvmt system. All our stuff and property is paid for, however we don’t live extravagantly by nature. Our new vehicle is a pristine 2006 Silverado we use to leave out of town in when we must, Her daily driver is a 2000 4 Runner with 240k on it, mine is a 99 Silverado with 338k on it. Have various other trucks, tractors and such around. We don’t travel do other outlandish things just pretty much stay on the place. I maintain a private machine shop and a shop with medium/heavy truck repair capabilities and drive a dump truck for a guy locally to stay honest, as long as my health will tolerate, which may not be very much longer.
One of the best Blessings we have been awarded, is the fact we have raised two Sons that when they got old enough to leave home they did it when they were prepared. Have never caused us one minit of grief, a lot of worry but not grief, have been self sufficient entirely and built their own productive Families. That alone is worth a hell of a lot of money and many people have not had this luxury, as well as good health up until recently.

She can cash out at 63......go to SSA.GOV to see
But, that's the hard part.......figuring out what to do with all that time on your hands. It's pretty easy for me because I'm naturally lazy. I passed on a couple of really, really good job offers because when I thought about it, I was like, "Nah......ain't feelin' it'"

It's funny......you spend your whole life working, and then all the sudden you're not. The Hazul does volunteer work and whatnot so it keeps her out of my hair a lot. I just basically manage the house and the money and take care of The Hazul. It's honest work, but it's different than having a job.
Just think about where you'll be and what you'll be doing if and when you retire. (Naps are a bonus).

It will lose its glamor.... Become a droll byplay... So easy...
I have said: If it had not been for the good family name at home, I would never have worked a day in my life. It is so easy to separate other people from their money...

ohh they’ll be real mad. He’s signed everything over to me already. I’ve got all titles to everything put away in a lock box. They’ll want anything they can get their hands on like when mom died.
They’ll be in for another awakening.
