PHILLIPSBURG, Kan. — The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday evening, June 27, 2025, in Phillipsburg, Kansas.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation requested the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office lead the independent investigation following the incident.
At around 9:28 p.m. Friday, the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office received a report of illegal, non-consumer-grade fireworks being detonated at 899 1st Street in Phillipsburg.
A Phillips County deputy responded to the scene and contacted 27-year-old Kolton Griffith, a resident of the address and the individual believed responsible for the fireworks.
During the encounter, the deputy developed probable cause to arrest Griffith. As the deputy attempted to place Griffith in handcuffs, a struggle broke out. Griffith pulled a concealed handgun and opened fire on the deputy.
Despite being struck by gunfire, the deputy returned fire and hit Griffith multiple times. Griffith died at the scene.
EMS transported 30-year-old Deputy Brandon Gaede to a local hospital. Despite life-saving measures, medical personnel pronounced him dead at 10:24 p.m.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is working to determine the full sequence of events that led to the shooting. Detectives are reviewing evidence and statements from witnesses, medical staff, and others involved.
The Sheriff’s Office will release additional information as it becomes available. The case findings will be submitted to the Phillips County Attorney upon the conclusion of the investigation.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Truly heartbreaking for a small town like Phillipsburg. The whole county only has 5,000 residents. He left behind a wife and 3 small children. The amount of support I've seen from across the state is staggering

Got my physical done and the mirrors swapped yesterday morning. The shop got the APU running and it fired right up when I checked it just after they finished but when I shut down last night it didn’t want to to run, it didn’t start either try so I shut the unit down and turned it on again and after a bit more spluttering it finally started on the third try. It ran all night once it was going so I’m not sure if it lost its prime during the day or what.
They gave me a load home which is a couple days early but I think we are in a beggars can’t be choosers situation so it’ll work. So once I drop this in Plainfield I’m deadheading to the house.Friend, Knucklehead, rokue and 1 other person Thank this. -

Dropped my load in Sanger and swung down to Arlington to grab a load of beer going to Omaha. They finished loading me at 2:45 pm so I skedaddled out of DFW before the ####show started. I was planning on delivering it tomorrow morning and then probably picking up something to go home but apparently dispatch had different ideas. Swapped loads with another driver in Salina and I'll be going down to the Texas panhandle. This load drops at the Walmart DC in Plainview as soon as I can get it there. Currently at home to grab a shower and do a couple other things. I'll hit the road again this afternoon
