Welcome aboard, you came to the right place. We, at this site, have the luxury of a cat named Chinatown, and can inundate you with possibilities, but you need to be more specific. Since you've done the "regional" thing, I imagine you want to try and do over the road,, and perfectly understandable. The glitch is, the OTR drivers want local work, and the locals are bored and want more. If OTR is for you, you can't do it half azzed, meaning, you have to live in the truck, 24/7 and have no issues as to where you go. Side to side, top to bottom. Quite frankly, it's never been easier. You can't have a home, family or hobbies with OTR, trust me. I'll agree, right now couldn't be the more worse time to look, but OTR jobs seem plentiful, and Chinatown won't "bum steer" ya'. Whatever you do, don't burn any bridges where you are. Things change fast in this here industry. Good luck.

Who's good now? That's the question without an answer. Wages never caught up to inflation in the last 5 years so honestly I can't think of a single carrier that looks good to me. I'm also living on much less than ever before, forever changed. I don't splurge on purchases anymore. I just do what I can to pay bills and watch everything.

A lot has to change in order for me to be excited about my career again. I honestly don't know who's good in 2025. Just call me Debbie Downer.

i presume OHFL operates like other LTL? offering hourly paid, day time "city" delivery/pickup operations while running mileage paid, night time "linehaul"?

i have 10+ years LTL linehaul experience in the great lakes area. it is extremely difficult to equal or beat LTL pay & benefits. specific treatment regarding micromanaging and general company culture will vary with each company, location & manager. many companies cover a large area and have several different terminals. i love it. been driving 17 years, 10 on linehaul, i plan to retire from this company.

I can add as a current driver for Crete Carrier Corp....we are busy and miles every week, no sitting..... they have contract freight so even live loads are not that long and I avg 2200 to 3100 miles per week ....pay is based on experience minimum of 1 year required......but lowest start pay is 61 cents/ mile.....

Thank you for the warm welcome and the straight up advice I truly appreciate it. I’ve heard a lot about Chinatown on here and it’s good to know there’s someone with insight pointing folks in the right direction. You’re absolutely right OTR isn’t something to do halfway, and I’ve been giving that lifestyle some serious thought. I’m not here to burn bridges, just looking to learn and make smarter moves. Thanks again for taking the time to break it down for me

In this biz, always people looking for something, like, the grass is greener syndrome. Well, make the switch and find out ! But, some things never change. You will drive the truck, load/unload freight. Deal with traffic, weather, people below you bossing you around. Working long hours against the clock. You can change co's but it's still the same game. Just a different name on the door. Yeah, I know, maybe regional is better, or, 100% drop/hook. Or "guaranteed" 48 hrs at the house every weekend. In a perfect world, 8 hrs a day, Mon-Fri, brand new Pete, 100% D/H, $75 hourly pay, 4 weeks paid vacation, on and on, but it's not a perfect world. :biggrin_25513:

You’re right, it’s all part of the same game no matter where you go. Sometimes folks get caught up hoping the next gig will be the one, but it helps hearing from someone who’s clearly been around the block. At the end of the day, it’s about finding what fits best for your priorities, not chasing unicorns. Thanks again for the wisdom it’s the kind of perspective that keeps people grounded

This here is a loaded question that can rarely be answered by and or agreed to by any driver thing about all drivers is we agree rarely with each other on anything. I swear if i told a turn by turn direction to a driver he would start off going opposite direction because he didn't like being told what to do for starters.
To ask for great company and treats its drivers right would be hard. For example, I could say, Swift for argument's sake is the best company for most drivers. There would be a flood of people saying the opposite, some who worked there, others just know how slow they drive or some other interaction. Someone mentioned this already, but the grass isn't always greener. I will say Chinatown would be your best bet for finding that outfit if you truly hated working there.

We are living in a time where drivers have to make the best of it for themselves, regardless of the carrier or if they have their own numbers. I came to trucking because I hated working in an office after 10 years and I was middle management with good benefits. However I was miserable and needed a change. There's still something to be said for the freedom drivers have on the road, it's just nice to close that left door and cruise. You don't have to act like a politician to make a living in trucking, that right there is worth a boat load. Corporate America is a joke.. At least in trucking you're doing something tangible that's makes a difference. The market will turn soon. Drivers need to establish themselves at a company BEFORE we hit lean times like we are experiencing now..
