My 96 series 60 will definitely smoke more than new motors when it’s cold (20 and below) when I first fire it up for 30-60 seconds. Single digits and sitting over the weekend it either needs excellent batteries (I change all 4 of mine every 2 years) or a shot an ether (maybe both). Don’t use Lucas or any oil thickening products in the winter as this will make starting more difficult.

Lol that's what I always said about the Detroit, could never get over the cold start sounds, it literally sounds like it's coming apartBean Jr., Rideandrepair, blairandgretchen and 3 others Thank this.

Look at putting a diesel coolant heater in it, cold starts become a thing of the past with one, my first year with one installed for winter and I love it, and the motor does to. My c15 always smoked on cold starts now after a couple seconds there is no smoke and goes right to warm idle sound, even when it is below zero and the heater was only run for 2 hours
Rideandrepair, 4noReason and Oxbow Thank this. -
I have the element heater , 1500W or better, in an 'S' shaped manifold just behind the water pump. It's not the best, but it's better than the dreaded 20 degree "Smoke up the truck stop for 15 minutes" start (or no start at all) without it.
What is a 'Diesel coolant heater' ?
The N-14 never seemed to mind as much.Banker, Rideandrepair and 4noReason Thank this. -
Yeah, definitely gotta install a block heater or a Webasto coolant heater
Rideandrepair and 4noReason Thank this. -
A diesel coolant heater is a diesel heater that pumps your coolant through it, in place of a block heater, heats up your whole block to operating temp in a little over an hour, takes longer to heat up all the coolant so you start pumping heat right at start-up. I leave mine on when I start up my truck and within about ten minutes everything is at full operating temp. I also have filter heaters that heat up your filters so you don't jell up. If it's really cold out I leave them on also at start-up for like ten minutes to heat the fuel in the tanks better. I can #### my truck off in the middle of no where when it is below zero and start it up like it's been running all night. I hate sleeping with the truck running and considering I run Mn and ND all winter it works pretty good4noReason and Rideandrepair Thank this.
