That is quite a story. Nope, it's not necessarily the job - although truckin' is a lifestyle as much as it is a job. It's the company. If I were subjected to what you went through, I'd have walked too. There are good trainers and total walking disasters that aren't fit to be called a human being - looks like you had an experience with both. Good luck to you! Hope this hasn't totally soured you on driving as a career, or nailed you via the DAC.
Dear USA Truck: (Yeah, it's a story)

Shaggy, sorry for your bad experience with USA, very similar to mine. I had a hard time turning in my truck as the dropyard in Fontana was full of quitting drivers! Here's the link to my sad story with pix:

My prediction is that USA will be going out of business very soon. They have gone so far down hill in the last year or so it won't be long before we are reading about drivers left stranded around the country after they close the doors. There are good companys out there that have good equipment and treat the drivers right. Unfortunately you went to USA.

Shaggy, as a trainer for USA, I would like to extend my apologies for the many incompetent trainers and the training practices that USA uses. I myself have an excellent student record (all pass with above 90 written, above 95 driving) however, am hindered by the training department and "their" agenda. Have been training for them for about 8 months and, in fact, going in this week to turn in my training truck and return to being a solo driver. I whole heartedly agree with you that they should not turn out drivers who are, obviously, not ready. Get your 175 hours and off in your own truck you go. Try to tell them the student isn't ready. Needs more training time. "Get another student and get him his hours." LUDICROUS!!!! I really got a bad taste for USA Truck operations when I became a trainer. Thought my job was to move freight. On time and in a safe manner. Didn't know I was becoming an intrical part of the evil known as the student mill. Will not have any part of it. Loathe the whole company at this point and am seeking employment elsewhere.(anybody got any leads). Well, good luck in the future and best wishes.
Lonesome Thanks this. -
Ergh. Somehow I'm reminded of a trainee I had when I was with Cannon Express. I was on good speaking terms with a number of cute gals on the common routes out of Springdale, and this guy, who dressed like a dandy and evidently thought he was George Strait... proceeded to completely tick off every woman we visited. The shoe-shine gal in Tulsa, waitresses in Mangum, OK.... Finally I decided to avoid my regular stops entirely while he was on the truck.
I ended up failing him, as he couldn't hang for more than an hour or so without complaining and demanding a motel room (I may have vented about him before on this board) and refused to do any backing or city maneuvering. After I dropped him off for good at a motel, I noticed that the walls of my sleeper had a whole lot of suspicious looking splat marks. -
Wow Shaggy. Thanks for that.Very interesting post.....as i am about to embark on this career i have my fingers crossed......
