Hi Everyone!,
I'm a 47 yo widowed lady who has always wanted to travel the roads of our great country and what better time to do it than now? I have a ton of questions to ask about the lifestyle and am hoping peeps here will help me out with truthful answers.
How well known is DCTC (Dakota County Technical College) in the trucking world as a private school teaching trucking for 40 years? They claim to be very good and after their 320 hour 8 week course, they say I can put down that I have 1 year of experience because they supposedly give so much time in the cab. True and feasible?
My biggest concern is my personal safety while on the road and at truck stops. What are the best things I can do to ensure that I'm safe? Would bringing my very protective dog with me be something that would help or hinder me?
What can I expect for pay per mile right out of school and being a company driver? Can I expect to have loads to keep me busy enough to pay my bills and student loans every month? Do these companies that advertise a minimum of $1,000 per week work you to death? Is it even worth looking into?
Would my age of 47 be a hindrance to a company looking to hire me? Am I too old to start out in this profession or is age and maturity something that companies look for?
I want to thank in advance all of you out there who will answer my questions so I can make a decision whether or not to pursue my roadin' dream.![]()

MaMa,
Your age has nothing to do with it. Trust me as other members will say the same thing. I have seen older people graduate from trucking schools. I would start a thread here:
Trucking Schools:
http://www.thetruckersreport.com/truckingindustryforum/trucking-schools/
This way, everyone will view it and if anyone has gone to the school, can provide feedback. For safety:
Safety Tips For Woman:

Enjoy your stay and please feel free to join in. Remember is this industry; no questions are considered stupid as the one not asked is that one.

Hi MaMa Bear..unless your age has affected your reflexes or hearing or physical strength it shouldn't be an issue..I'm soon to be 49 and just got my CDL in Aug. and unless I look in the mirror I feel 28..
..if it's something you want to do then do it..only you can hold you back..
..if you can take the time to research your options as far as obtaining your CDL you'll be better off..this board has an overwhelming amount of info regarding the Trucking biz so kick back with a ####tail and peruse the archives..you will soon find you might be a bit addicted to this board as it is full of humor and seriouness and generousity..oh and BAD SPELLING..
..I blame mine on my chicken pecking skills..and welcome to TTR..

Thank you so much everyone for your advice so far. I figured as much about the trucking school's claims. I do know they have a really good reputation in the field, which is good.
I am considered disabled by the govt standards but it isn't psychological but more of a physical nature which would not hamper my driving ability at all. I am however on a few meds that would turn a drug screen positive but I have prescriptions for all of them. Would that make a difference if I passed a DOT physical exam?
Thanks again for the advice!\The Challenger Thanks this. -
Hiya Mama Bear, welcome to the forums and I say go for it! I was 52 when I went throught the Swift training. I love my job.

Hey Mamabear. Welcome, I as well am from the So. Central area of MN. I went to TCE (Transportation Center for Excellence). Not sure why they have that name. But Its a three week school that I completed in two. Dakota County isnt a bad school. They did have a driving course there that was cool. If the bigger companies pass ya by dont fret. In MN there are smaller companies that look for local. Have any questions PM me when you are available to. Ill help ya anyway I can roght along with other members on here. Good luck and keep us posted in your progress.

Hi MB I'm 48(dont tell anyone) and have been driving for 22 years. Don't let age hold you back. The health and pill concerns, call a few companies that you wouldn't even think of working for, and ask them if the would hire you with your medical concerns. Somethings are on the CSA 2010 list and may prevent it. Don't believe anything a school tells you. They all lie because they want your money. They cant stay in business without it!!! You wont make $1000 a week when you start out. THEIR LIEING.
