im looking for reasons why swift is good or bad. the top of the thread was started in 2005. things have changed a lot since then, and im sorry if i dont want to sort through almost 200 pages and 1700 posts to find information. im looking for topical opinions on swift, good or bad, backed up with actual experience or information.

in my 'hello' thread, i posted that i thought this mesage board was full of helpful and friendly people, and i was proud to take part in such a forum.

the bickering and rudeness im finding in this thread is making me regret my words and starting to change my mind.

first, let me apologize. i've been dealing with a lot of hassles from my current job, and since i put in my notice they've really been stressing me out. add to that that im not used to studying (prepping for my permit test) and the way these manuals are written makes me want to pull my hair out:

‎"You can't steer or brake a vehicle unless you have traction. Traction is friction between the tires and the road. There are some road conditions that reduce traction and call for lower speeds."

seriously. if this stuff was written any simpler i'd need a kindergartener to translate. plus i have a toothache.
    sorry, i've been kind of a ##### lately :p

right now, im looking for any current experience type information i can get. what is their cdl training class like? do they put you in a hotel, or a dormitory? do they use simulators, or mostly in the truck learning? what are their terminals like? good and bad experiences in the terminals? things to look out for? how do they handle payroll (weekly payments, bi-weekly, monthly, etc)? what is their dress code? how much modification are you allowed to make to your truck? how much freight do they ship that needs to be manually unloaded? i've heard their trainers can have as little as 6 months experience; anyone with actual first hand knowledge of this type of thing happening?

i know a lot of these questions can be answered by a recruiter. i have asked and have the answers. im looking for what REAL swift drivers have to say, not desk jockeys.

i see a lot of posts containing second or third hand info, assumtions, rumors, etc. im looking for the real deal. the more recent the info, the better, as it seems a lot of things have changed with a lot of the companies in the last few years.

let me make this perfectly clear. responses like "ARE YOU CRAZY SWIFT IS HORRIBEL WHY WOULD YOU GO THERE LOL THERE ARE BETTER PLACES !1!1!!" are really frustrating and completely useless. id rather you flat out lie to me about the validity of your info than not bother backing it up at all.

finally, id like to say something regarding the generally low opinion swift seems to carry:
from what i understand, swift is one of the largest, if not THE largest carrier in the US. therefore, they have the most people working for them. assuming that every carrier has an approximately equal share of good and bad drivers, swift would have more bad drivers than other carriers. therefore, more highly visible mistakes and more disgruntled former employees than other carriers. more people= more people to piss off. people are more likely to notice someone making a mistake, because a good worker is 'just doing his job'. i rarely see any negative remarks about swift or schneider that have actual, intelligent and non-biased complaints. i'd be very interested to hear about any ACTUAL experiences with swift that truly ended badly.

    thanks in advance:biggrin_25514:

could have stopped pretty easily before attacking my post that started it all.

as for the question about swift.....they ARE a good company. They get a good chunk of the freight...hence why many drivers dont like swift, because they haul cheap freight, undercut some of the more well paying freight, and they own a mexican carrier, which helps transport goods across the border quicker. But they're not driving for swift (or plan to).....you and i do. As long as i'm earning a paycheck, who the heck cares what anybody else thinks of the company. They keep you rollin' as long as you want to keep rollin'. But watch your backside. Cover your arse......always. Cause with orientation starting in every swift terminal every money with 20-30 drivers..and there are "more than 30 full service terminals"....there are close to 100-150 student drivers going on trucks. that means just as many coming off trucks looking to upgrade. The turnover is high....so if you give them a reason to replace you, they will.

all in all....its a good company. get your 2 yrs in, and more doors open for ya. Those doors are either good or bad. But i plan to say as long as the miles keep comin' and as long as i keep rollin' and the checks dont bounce.
