So i'm done with my time of service in the army and i'm attending Western Pacific Truck School in a week or so. I have a "pre" hire from five different companies and I've heard good and bad about all of em. Just wanted some input on these companies to help with my decision on who to start off my career with. The companies are Werner, Watkins Shephard, TWT, CRST, and Schneider. I know Werner is one of the bottom feeders and Watkins Shephard's starting pay really sucks. I just want the opinions of some experienced guys so I can make a wise decision and not regret it. Any input is greatly apperciated and i'm excited to join you guys out on the road.

    AF461 Thanks this.

Thanks I was leaning towards Schneider. I've been doing a ton of research and calling, so far they seem like the best fit. I just like to get second opinions cuz only you guys that are out there know who's gonna screw ya and who you can be successful with. I apperciate the input

Thanks for your service in the Army. I've been in the Air Force for 15 years and am getting out in May and starting driving as a career. I wish you the best. Keep us posted on where you decide to go and how things are going for you.

They are all bottom feeders! If you want a good company find one that isn't spending millions in advertising to get you to work for them! If they are treating their drivers right then the turnover rate is going to be null and no need for all the advertising. Try and find some smaller mom and pop companies your chances of success will be extremely higher. Keep in mind your trucking school gets paid by those mega-carriers to send you to them. So they are going to push you toward them. There should be plenty of companies out your way. Lots of freight in Puyallup,WA. Mostly produce. Good luck!

This is true, I just finished Driving school monday, and they therw a fit, because I didn't have an answer for what company I would be driving for. Turns out, they made calls to a few to find out.

I cannot stress enough to you new guys about going the extra mile and breaking away from the herd! Sure it will take a little more extra work and research but it will be well worth it. Anybody with a pulse can get hired on by the mega-carriers! This is your career! One thing the new drivers don't realize is that your dispatcher is going to make you or break you. They determine if you are going to make money or not. At those mega-carriers their dispatchers are responsible for a couple hundred drivers. You are just a number to them and they could care less if you succeed or not. As long as they clear their board before the end of the day then they did a good job. If you have a problem or need help, good luck! The smaller companies dispatchers are usually responsible for a handful of drivers. You will develop a much more personal relationship with them and this is very important. Of course don't get on their bad side though. So now you have someone that will listen to you when you have problems, send you where you want to go within reason, get you home when you need to because you are always doing them favors. You are scratching their back and they are scratching yours! This is key in the trucking industry for company drivers and lease drivers. Anyway I could think of a hundred more reasons not to work for the mega-carriers but this is one of the most important and also non-bashing! Good luck guys!

TWT out of Spokane, Wa. is a pretty good company. (Reefer, Petes, sister co. to System Transport). Mostly I-5 corridor, you'll be home often.

I'll definitley keep you guys updated on where I go and how things go for me. Chompi I really apperciate the advice and the time you took to write it. I went up to Sumner, WA and talked to a few of the Schneider guys and they seemed to be pretty happy. I've looked at some of the smaller companies but they all want experienced drivers so I figure if I can get my foot in the door with one of these bigger companies to get some seat time then that's what i'll do.TWT seemed like a good company I just can't see my self living in a closet with another guy for 6 to 8 weeks. I'll keep this thread going as long as ya'll are interested in what happens from here. Good luck to you AF461 and thanks for serving right along side me.

Oh one more thing i've done a TON of research but like I said alot of these smaller companies i'd love to work for want experience. My dad also wants me to think about teaming with him at DOT Foods on a dedicated run in about a year or two after I get my experience.
