Didn't have a sign turned on and ticketed you? That is insane. Seems likely that it was a DOT cop needing some extra cash. I pass scales all the time with officers in the house but the signs are either off or closed.

There are 3 scales between me and Winnipeg and I have yet to see any of them open. I feel pretty confident there won't be a problem if I do go in, just an inconvenience.

My prepass beeped very fast so I knew to pull in. Get up there and the sign says CLOSED. What do you do?

You do what the PrePass instructs you to do.

If you end up with a ticket, you can contest it in court. If the signs and PrePass conflict, then its your word vs the DOT cop on the scale signs - DOT cop wins. With the PrePass unit, you can bring the PrePass records into court - DOT cop looses.

I really don't worry too much about going through scales - I keep my truck tight, and my logs are squeeky clean - even in a random inspection, its unlikely I'll have a problem. The guy with the ragged-out truck is more likely to be pulled around back, and suffer the consequences.

There are signs out before the scales that say "PREPASS FOLLOW IN CAB SIGNALS". They are telling you if you have a Prepass to ignore their signs, and follow the signal you get on the Prepass. This is also explained in the documentation that you get with your Prepass. The is no reason you shouldn't know that you follow the signal that is given on the Prepass over the electronic signboards along the side of the road.
