Just remember...hitting ANYTHING...no matter HOW minor = FAILED road test.
They consider that an ACCIDENT.
I scrubbed the trailer tires against the curb (while parallel parking during CDL test back in 1989)...I mean 'just scrubbed' - in the lightest way you could.
FAILED. When I pulled away, there wasnt even a rubber mark. Nothing.
Next time, I parked 3' away from the curb. Yea, I lost a few points but that time I passed. I figured 2 could play at that game...

Dont know what else to tell you, Its what happened.
Bizarre and I'll tell you there was a witness in the van and the road test.
Not that that matters, I believe you both are behind them 100 percent and thats good they were great in many ways. I am just out of school, no experience otherwise. Sure I could fail a road test, and I did, obviously. All I have told is the truth. I do not what else to tell you. and yea I scrubbed the curb as well. Like I said I failed the road test. All true statements . No more time than I have been in a rig in school or at this orientation, I could not believe I passed the road test at school first time. I would love some more hours , behind the wheel to improve. Seems like they would give drivers , especially new ones out of school, some time to familiarize themselves with their trucks or have a test drive area on campus or something. I mean if I was running a school , thats what I would push for. Perhaps there are some companies that do that or have simulators or something, even at school I could not believe how little time you really get to drive.
When I first came to truckers report , I did so to get honest accounts of trucking companies and I knew I would have to evaluate the posts for what intent was behind it. My information I am freely giving is no more or less than that.
Bizarre chain of events Good company, good person and a series of truthful statements about it. -
I really dont know much about Maverick - but from Jim's personal experience it seems your situation wasn't the norm....
After I failed my 1st road test, I went back to the school and spent 2 more weeks (on/off) and practiced. My school didnt charge me. Maybe you can go back..get some additional time in and try some other company?
By the way, I can totally sympathize with your direct experience. I had my CDL and went to take a road test for a major carrier I was planning on driving for. They put me in a rather large Freightliner with a 48' refer full of Durkee French Fried Onions. (hows that for memory!)
I was not familiar with this rig and had NO time to adjust or figure it out. A quick pre-trip and we left the yard. The road test involved taking this load to a large food chain warehouse. Guess what?! - It was icy/snowy out and the lot was all ice. He wanted me to back into a dock. Guess what?! - it was a blind side back and he was willing to give me 3 pullups to do this. Hmm. A tricky blind side back, right out of driving school - never mind the ice/snow at this time. I passed on this as I knew I didn't have the skill I would need. Naturally I wasn't hired. Typically time spent with a trainer is to hone your skills, after CDL school provides the real basics.
Just don't feel bad....hit it again when you can. -
Yea, Its all good. I have no way of knowing now , but otherwise It was a perfect test drive, I am usually accused of being too slow or too safe.
I have a local interview tomorrow, running Mail in a B truck, I have dispatched airfreight years ago and drove straight trucks under 26000 lbs backing up all my drivers routes, and I am in the running for an A cdl run this other company is adding. I am waiting to hear what the owner is going to allow the manager to pay this driver. Then we will see. Thanks for the kind words though J. D. -

The end of our road test was where many failed, a tight right into the lot...If you didn't take at least half of the left lane up, it was impossible to not hit something...You had to approach it, put on your left turn signal, take as much of the left lane as you could while leaving a little of your trailer in the right lane to keep anyone from trying to pass you on that side, then put on right signal and turn...A guy testing same day as us failed twice on that turn...Our instructor prepped us for it, without that prepping, one, or both, of us would have surely failed as you can't make it from the right lane...

Other driver drove out, then some parking lot somewhere we switched, on the way back in, I wanted to take the whole on coming lane, lots of traffic and company van and cars coming out, the gate was designed to come in from the other direction, and the sign hung into the road, if it happened on a highway Maverick would argue to the state that they placed the sign wrong, But Maverick put this sign on their property,
Funny" Hit it again" good observation . Yea it seemed to me that the road test was impromptu.
Guess what else? Other driver was sitting in sleeper, I was extra driver first, I asked seat belts? So I had to choose to lay down in the sleeper or or sit and observe and not wear a seat belt. Company policy, always wear seat belt in Maverick owned vehicle right? I chose to observe because I had very little introduction to this truck and an automatic at all. Except the video we watched just before taking the road test. Pre trip was kind of weeney too.
I go back to my original statement, I had to constantly choose in my mind which safety rules they were serious about and which ones were going to be yady yada yada because of my first experience, and then others as i have begun to explain.
Another thing there were 1 or 2 really experienced drivers, 1 was a Maverick employee before, Guess what? they did not have to take a road test, I found that very troubling, red flags in my mind, I knew then that many would fail the road test and for what ever reasons. That to me told it all ahead of time. I originally responded to someones comment at 1 of these threads about looks like they look for reasons to get rid of people right out off the bus, I am merely saying they seemed surprised that none of us failed the drug, or stress or anything else up too that point, they did seem to ( I am trying to find the perfect word) enjoy, relish, sending me, and the 1 other guy that was already failed and being sent home ( he must have been the first guy out on another truck , but he forgot to put on his seat belt while driving. He wanted to get a rental car, no long bus for him .
When I was asked did I want to fly back ( I flew out there due to commitments on the friday before coming) I said no , I have nowhere to be, I take the bus. 25 hours, and I re ran all my experiences through my head and calmed down, did not sleep much but I did sleep some, and I saw arkansas terraine and all, till it got dark in tenessee somewhere,
I wish I had made it through the securement training, but I am not sure if I would have accepted the job offer if I had successfully completed the training. I had in my mind, while at Maverick , been thinking of TMC, they were the first to offer me something at school, and I told my recruiter if it did not work out at Maverick I would Call him back and see if they still wanted to take a chance on me.
I am not sure now, may be they are all the same, but I called him back and guess what? He said what happened at Maverick, I told him I had some concerns, and I failed the drive test .
He said I will have to get something faxed over from maverick.
This is why what I am telling you must be true. Maverick still has not faxed them anything, He has called me back twice saying I have not forgot about you, still waiting for the fax from Mav. I think they may be either investigating or they do not know how to deal with this. Perhaps something is on my dac already from maverick, I THINK IT IS FUNNY HOW IT IS i AM IN THIS SITUATION.
"Things are now what they ought to be" right?
Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. Jesus
I will keep you posted on if TMC is still interested, to be sure Mav will fax something on me by then.Ops85 Thanks this. -
I thought all you could think about was the guy texting while driving. If you think Maverick was hard on you wait until you get to TMC they don't call it Trucking Marine Corp for nothing. All drivers take a road test doesn't matter how experienced. I don't know of a company out there that doesn't road test all new hires. When I went thru orientation we only had 1 driver sent home for failing the road test and I didn't notice anyone relishing sending him home. I don't think it is funny that you are in this situation at all I believe you brought it on yourself and are now trying to justify your actions.
