It's almost been a year since many inches of snow were dumped on a long stretch of Interstate 70 in Colorado on my way to a Walmart DC in Loveland, CO. You can see the I-70 sign on the highway, and what should be the rest of the highway. There were trucks passing ME up all day. That was a fun time for me. I think that I only chained twice, and road conditions where actually better near Vail, CO (I-70 mm170 something) than it was from mm0 to mm155.

I was a day late to the Walmart, but the smug security guy couldn't understand why I was late after explaining the road conditions (A notice of my tardy was immediately given during the surprize blizzard the night before).

But back on topic, I love the winter and can tolerate chaining if the need ever came up. And sleep comes too easy for me in the winter! (no insomnia)

Your nuts!!!LOL. I live in Denver, and one of our bread-and-butter runs is too Grand Junction. I hear all the stories about that beast every winter,we have had quite a few guys walk off the job after dispatch told them they were going up to Junction during the winter time, and if your hauling all of that placarded haz-mat you got to go over Loveland Pass--man i would need some diapers with me in the cab.

I-70 in the winter is just like I-70 in the summer, just a little extra to seperate the steering wheel holders from the truck drivers

Make that sort of thing MANDATORY for all new drivers. That should help thin the ranks of the useless ones a little.

Nutty doesn't even scratch the surface yet! For some reason, I don't mind the winter or the bad weather that comes with it. I've only chained once so far this season, and the next thing you know I've been messing around in the southwest for a little while.

Loveland Pass is iffy. I've only been across the pass once because of my 14' highcube trailer that probably wouldn't fit underneath the Eisenhower Tunnel. Other drivers claimed to have done it, but they are nuts. The sign specifically states that all loads that are over 13'8" high must detour through US 40.

I will never forget Loveland. What's there to love? It was 2300 in the evening, pitch black, and according to my GPS my elevation exceeded 12,000 feet above sea level, and not to mention the hairpin 25mph curves. Maybe it's my lack of driving experience talking, but I don't think that I will drive Loveland in the winter. You have to be nutty "-er" to drive that pass in the winter. I'm pretty sure the views were beautiful, but with a combination of a full moon, creepy looking mountains silhouetted in the dark sky, and the eensy weensy tiny amber lights from the town below I'm gonna have to pass (no pun intended).

Actually Eisenhower is now rated to 13'9, however, the actual clearance is 13'11", but if the sensors catch you, they will turn you back. If you already know your 14' dont' bother.
