I can remember a few years ago, that last service plaza on the KS Pike going east had fuel real cheap. I could not believe it, especially for Kansas. Injun, what part are you curious about

I'm curious about the "fleet discount" whether Swift even gets one and whether (if they do) it is being passed on to the folks actually paying for the fuel.

My partner wants me to take over the lease on his 2010 T2000 for the remaining 2 years while he goes out and leases another truck. 260k miles, fridge, he's considering turning it up to 500 horsepower and upgrading to 13 speed. We will form a Co-op and pool our maintenance funds and 10% of of our profits to purchase more trucks and put teams in them-- the goal being eventually with enough trucks running for us we can sit at home and sip drinks with umbrellas and diamonds in the glass.

    *facepalm*

    Seriously?!?

This guy can't even take five minutes of precious time out of his busy day to apply IFTA stickers to his truck, he's struggling financially and you're actually considering allowing him to take you down with him?!?

Scottie, you always struck me as being smarter than that, even if you do think peanuts grow on trees.

Why doesn't he just hire you (as I remember you said was happening) and set you loose in that truck and get a new one for himself....get my point?

In other words...it sounds like he wants out...either altogether, or out of that truck for some reason!

Watch your back on this issue!

I like having you guys around to bounce this stuff off of. I had my trepidations about quitting Swift and teaming with this guy. But so far everything he said was going to happen has happened. I find myself feeling guilty for doubting this hard working honest man. He's struggling financially because most of his students jump off the truck after about a week or so. So he never gets to make up for that $0.05 cent loss per mile pay by running team with the student and essentially runs solo for the privilege of 5 cents less than any other owner/operator at Swift.

Well he told you a good one there! That $.05 per mile is ONLY WHEN A STUDENT IS ON THE TRUCK! When no student, he is at the regular L/O pay scale...so whatever he is doing, or not doing...it is on him for his financial situation. I honestly don't see how anyone cannot make a decent living with the Swift lease. Granted the weekly cost for the truck is about $50 higher than when I had my lease, but if one is willing to work (like I did, like Injun does) there is no reason to be in the hole with Swift.

5cpm for one week (first week a student is out, truck runs as a solo) at an average 2,500 miles/week= $125 lost during that first week. It would be a smaller paycheck for me, but $125 for a week wouldn't break me or put me in the hole.

Why are all these students jumping ship? What's he doing with the rest of his money? How often and for how long does he go home? What's his risk if you decide to go for this poor "deal" he's offering you? What's your risk? What kind of condition is that truck in? What kind of fuel economy does it get? When was the last PM? How often does he get PMs done? How much working capital is available on his books right now? Is he already in the hole? Does he plan to sub-lease a sub-leased truck to you and pocket part of your earnings? Are you expected to begin a working capital account that he has free access to?

Is this guy trying to rip you off?
