Hey everyone,
I am a newbie and I dont have a CDL... I was looking at options to complete a CDL through a company and start with them... I applied to Stevens Transport and they got back to me with some files and few application forms.
1/ Any thought about the company itself?
2/ Schedule: it seems to be 7 ON, 1 OFF. That doesnt sound exciting...
3/ Starting at $0.26/mile
I wonder if it would be a better choice to complete the CDL training (through a school directly) and then apply to companies. Those hiring students seem to have a below average package compared to the rest... Tell me what you guys think!
Take care, drive safe!

I know someone who got their start at Stevens, I think he said the seemingly low .26 cpm somehow comes out comparable with .30+ cpm companies, maybe the way they figure your miles? Anyway I have heard decent things about them, but dont take my word for it, lol. The 7 on 1 off is standard for OTR. Stevens does seem to have some nice equipment.
Its probably best if you can get your CDL first. If you are unemployed or under employed check with your local unemployment office to see if they have grants available to go to school. GL! -
That 7 on 1 off is weeks not days. Just clarifying. If you plan to have any sort of life away from work then Stevens is not the place.

I was told by a Stevens driver that he went thru the entire school course without ever stepping foot inside of a real truck! All of the training is done on (from what I'm told) a very realistic simulator!!!!!! The driving, up shift, down shift, backing, trailer hook, everything OS done on a freakin simulator! He told me, and an entire truckstop of drivers, that the only time he sat on an actual drivers seat was for the road test required by the state issuing the CDL! SCARY! Im not a road vet by far, and call me a jerk if you want, but anytime there is a Stevens Transport driver anywhere close to me I pass, slow down, or haul ##### to get far far away from em! Sorry, but how do I know if its their 1st day away from the simulator! In the real world, "game over" doesn't apply! Their "nice equipment" can do a lot of damage very fast...

1) They are a decent starter company, Nice new lease equipment, you wont ever touch a chain. They do have a lease purchase like most you should stay away from. My dad drove for them for 3 years and doesnt have anything bad to say about them
2)Most companys give you 1 off for every 7 on the road...nothing new. Some are slightly better like my employer we get 1 off for every 6 so not much better lol. If you lucky you might find a home "most" weekends carrier.
3) newbies start at .25cpm-.34cpm is pretty normal......
I would HIGHLY recomend you get your CDL at a private truck driving school or at a Community college. Going through a companys training is usually a bad idea. But in stevens case its just plain STUPID. Read the fine print on the contract, its not simple and cut and dry as say...swift. Stevens will charge you an arm and a leg for that CDL, its not worth it!
For companys:
If you want dry vans check out: Watkins Shepard Trucking
For Reefers check out: KLLM
For Flatbed check out: Maverick
If those dont work out try:
Vans/reefer/flatbed: Roehl
Flatbed: TMC
There are 475,000 +/- trucking companies in the U.S, you have TONS of options EVEN as a new driver.

And you believed him? LMAO
I have a few Toll Bridges I own that I would love to lease to you.
Stevens has NO simulators lol. Thats one of the funniest stories I have heard HAHAHAHA -
Hey American Trucker,
I'm a wanna-be who has been considering Stevens.
Curious what you mean by "...you wont ever touch a chain" -
Stevens Transport as a company rule does not chain tires for bad weather. If the weather is bad enough to need chains then they feel it is beter to stop and wait it out till its safe.

Thank you guys for your replies. Really appreciated.
American Trucker I enjoyed watching your videos on Youtube! Keep 'em coming!!!
I am now looking at a local community college to complete my CDL....
Will keep you guys posted!!!American-Trucker Thanks this. -
in addition to what Corporal_Clegg said Stevens Leases their trucks, allot like when you lease a car, so they are responsible for any and all damage to the trucks. And chains can cause allot of damage if they are put on wrong or break.
