Hey , you guessed it, i'm new. I am going to go to the training in 2 weeks. My recruiter advised me not to get rid of my apartment until I get a truck of my own. That sounds great but I am out of money and do not have a choice in the matter. So, how *#%##& am I?

You just need a place to say while you wait for a trainer, and then again while you wait for a truck. If you have a plan for that then you should be good.

You'll go through your school. In TN, they rent out a portion of a hotel, which will be used as your physical address when you go to get your Class A permit (and your Class A CDL).
You will basically establish yourself as a resident of Tennessee, if you're not already. However, before TN can issue you a CDL, you need to be an established resident for 30 days. After school, you get sent back home, then return for orientation in Memphis, at which point, you'll go to the DMV to get your actual CDL.
You may not have a trainer assigned to you right away after orientation, as well, and will have to wait for one to become available.

wait I am confused. I am in Minneapolis, but am going to Millington for training. Are you saying I will go to TN for training, get sent back to Minneapolis after schooling, and then have to go back to TN for orientation? Thats just way to much driving. I am not getting stuck on a bus, so I am driving. Dear God say I wont have to make 2 trips to TN.

You need an official address. That could be one of the reasons he said not to get rid of the apt.

Budda you a resident of TN? You need proof of a physical address. Utility bill, marriage certificate, maybe car registration. You need 2 things. Call the DMV before you go to get your permit.

I didn't worry as I have been where I live for 5 years. They have you finish your training in your home state. If you is a Tinnaahhseeean you test in Memphis. Then usually go to orientation and get a mentor from your home terminal.

Swift doesn't do the fake residence thing like USA Truck, and PAM do.

You will not be getting a TN permit or license at Millington. They will want you to show up with a permit from your home state. Then you will do 2 weeks worth of school at Millington. After that you get sent to your home terminal for 1 more week of school. Once you are done with that you take your CDL test with your home state and get issued a CDL by them. Once you have CDL in hand you will go to orientation at your local terminal and then OTR with a mentor for 240 hours, complete that, pass your upgrade test and congrats you are now a solo driver.

Long story short you go to TN for 2 weeks, then to local terminal for 1 week and orientation.
