I'm not going to leave it up to the gov't to fix, nor am I going to whine and cry about it. It's a plain fact that Mexican drivers can afford to work more cheaply. There's no fighting that. So my option, then, is to work better. I can't offer a cheaper service. Instead I will offer a better service.
If all us truckers go into this with an attitude of "I can do it better than you" rather than an attitude of "don't take my job or I'll slash your tires" we can keep our jobs. I believe there are still plenty of folks willing to pay more for a quality service. Sure, we'll lose a few cheapskates who will ship with whoever offers the lowest rate, but we don't need them anyway.
Anyone who has driven in Laredo knows how crazy wild Mexican drivers can be. Let's give them some rope and see how long it takes them to hang themselves. What do you think will happen the very first time a reckless Mexican driver slams into a school bus, or a church van?
Let's forgo the belligerence and macho attitude. I for one am simply going to focus on doing my job well. That's better job security than tough talk and whining about the gov't.

Thanks OBAMA you may have just killed more jobs in the USAreptij Thanks this. -
Well I for 1 am very displeased with this whole thing. I will prove that I can do my job far better than any cheap Mexican driver can but at the same time im not going to lay down and accept that they are here and do nothing about it!
Our elected officials were elected by us to represent us. You as a registered voter can make your voice heard with these elected officials that you are not happy with this whole thing.
Having thousands of people calling their office and writing letters about their dissatisfaction will get their attention. Getting thousands of signatures on petitions to get these things changed and sent in to your congressman is another way. Getting the word out to millions of Americans and having them do the same thing also will get their attention.
That is the only way your elected officials will do anything about it. They will do nothing if nobody that votes for them has said that they are opposed. But if they see that the majority of their voters are against it well......if they want a chance to be re-elected they will work for you like they were elected too.
But if you are one of those people that will just lay down and take it and do nothing to help and try and change it (ie. put your name on a petition, make a phone call, write a letter, get the word out) and you dont even vote but just sits around whining about it. Well you really dont have much room to complain because you just sat back and watched while your job was just given to some non english speaking guy from another country that will do your job for a fraction of the pay while you sit on the unemployment line! -
It's easier than ever to contact your elected officials. You just don't sit back and say "Oh well, I'll make the best of it". This is our country run by the people. My congressman has emailed me back several times in person. No canned mail. They do interact.
Many are even on Twitter and Facebook. I belong to a grass roots organization trying to get online poker back legal the past year. One million of us got online the other night and talked with several gov't officials. We got a bill scheduled next week because of our efforts.
If you don't like what's happening still, you excercise your right to vote.
I guarantee you there will be major changes next election too. -
This situation makes a complete joke out of the DOT's safety program, the Homeland S. program, and all the ridiculous regulations we have to follow. Here comes drivers that don't have to speak English, can't read road signs and don't make enough money to contribute to the economy by buying products and services. They'll be bringing food from home to eat or cook in the truck, using parking spaces that we're already short of, testing all our low bridges (" Quick, Mi Amigo- how many meters is 13'6"?) and contributing to our clogged roads. Without the electronic monitoring that Uncle Slam shoved down our throats.
I've seen the equipment that will be coming in now, most of the power units are new. That won't last. Soon as things calm down, the older, beat up equipment and less qualified drivers will be coming in.
So you put your wagon in the shop this year and it's a three day wait 'till they can look at it. In a couple of years, it'll be a lot longer than three days and the shop's parking lot will have a few Mexican trucks in it.
I'm predicting a problem with "Theft of Service" and products nationwide that's going to start slowly and grow as the years go by. Mexican drivers that thought their fuel was paid for when they drove away, tires being swapped on parked trailers and trucks, fuel theft and shoplifting. Not because of the driver's nationality but because they just don't make enough money to afford our fuel, parts, repairs and food. Plus, desperation is a good motivator. The language barrier is a good excuse to "Think it was paid for".
If anyone in Government is serious about securing our borders, if the Homeland S. program is serious, why would they even let this happen? Because Uncle Slam is trying to employ as many useless, ineffective Government employees as possible, and giving them fake, pointless responsibilities to do nothing that affects anything in our lives except for the frustration that regulatory compliance causes. All to "create jobs".
Maybe letting Mexico's trucks and drivers in will finally give all those bored Federal Employees something effective to do.Hanadarko Thanks this. -
I wonder if the US DOT will require Mexican companies to have their lorries governed.
-
I don't look to the gov't to fix my problems. I never have. It's just not how I think. I see them all as inept bumbling fools, and prefer to take matters into my own hands when I have a problem. You know that old cliche- if you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself?
-
HA HA HA that's very sweet of you

I know MEXICANS down here in TEXAS that refuse to speak Spanish. If I go to another country for reasons other than tourism, I will learn the language. It's common courtesy.camerabrat Thanks this. -
Good luck with this attitude, mexican companies will pay $20 extra to the driver to drive slower, and for the rates that these companies drive they still will be able to provide good service and even learn English, and the only way to stop this is NOT buy whining "I can't offer a cheaper service. Instead I will offer a better service" Because of people like you that take sht from others we are in this situation. Take for example that same Libia, Egypt, Syria and others, they took sht from governments and they achieved nothing!! When they all got together for the same cause, then the Governments listened. Same here.reptij Thanks this.
