You need to experience Piggily Wiggily in Bessmer AL. The info said "Unilever would not pay for unloading." Load of Ragu spaghetti sauce.
They wanted me to break it down and restack it for the stores! And use a non motorized pallet jack. Swift paid the lumper. I saw one guy from Swift sweating and restacking. He got a lot less for it that than lumper. And was there longer than the 4hrs I was there. You had to park in the street in a very bad neighborhood. Lumpers, drug dealers, and hookers knocking on your door all night. -
Looking into Stevens as well.. They seem like a good fit for me and the recruiters seem nice but don;t they all... Really need some good advice...I've been in the restaurant biz for years and looking for a way out.. Used to being overworked and under paid...just looking for something different and have always wanted to drive for some reason.. That is all for now...Thanks everyone!!!

No. Leases are available if you choose, however, you must qualify to even be accepted into the lease program. All drivers begin their time with Stevens as a company solo driver.
They must CHOOSE to go to the lease side.
They are not forced, pushed or starved into the lease.
If they choose to go to the lease side, they must meet minimum fuel mileage, pass an interview and then once 'in' are on probation for 90 days.
If they are not making MORE money as a lease operator, they will return to the company side.
The lease is a no penalty lease, in that you may opt out, and return to the company side at any time. You will give up a $500 performance bond SOMETIMES if you end the lease early.
No one has to lease, but the better drivers usually do since there is more money on that side of the company.flightwatch Thanks this. -
All starter companies are difficult for many drivers. No one is perfect. Each has their strong qualities and each has shortcomings.
A candidate must be willing to ask the right questions and based on those answers ,choose the company that best fits their needs.
By the nature of trucking, it is difficult at best, for most people, when getting started.
Most people that give it a try, are not cut out for it, and as a result blame the company for their 'failure'.
Stevens is an excellent training company. They pay about the same as everyone else, have excellent equipment, good trainers and plenty of freight.
Their drivers come out prepared for the real world and those that choose to stay in the industry, do well from the training involved.
Are there legitimate complaints?
of course. But it's that way with virtually every company.
Don't diss a company unless you've worked for it.
Rumors run rampant, especially on this forum.flightwatch Thanks this. -
Exactly amen

Step son has a friend who went to Stevens. They tried to force him to lease. He had just finished training. He walked, and went to Maverick and did flatbed.
-
I call crap on that one!
Stevens absolutely does not force lease.
Period.
Anyone that says otherwise is either uninformed or using that 'line' for an excuse to go elsewhere.
Or they couldn't cut the mustard at Stevens and use it as a line as to why they left.
50% of Stevens fleet are company drivers. Most of which have been with the company less than 2 years.flightwatch Thanks this. -
I think the way they have their program designed they make it as attractive as possible to lease and when their lease numbers go down they will force some people into it. Leasing just makes sense for a company but it's pretty stupid for a driver to pay the companies way. I've only seen a few people in my years trucking that have the business smarts to make money leasing. The odds that a lease will fail are pretty high and that's why they exist in the first place.
