I have 6 yrs experience OTR but then I took 5 yrs off. Wanting to get back into it now and what I have found out is I have to have 1 month, at the very least, of experience. No one even wants to talk to me besides when they say they will give me the names and phone numbers to some driving schools in my area. I took 5 yrs off of driving OTR but I didn't forget anything. I can still drive the big road with no problem. The refresher course also said you have to have 30 days or recent experience. What can I do or does anyone know of a company that will take someone without "recent" experience. Thank you.
Have not driven in 5 yrs

I am in the same boat here.
I last ran over the road 11 years ago, but I still drive big trucks and move combination vehicles around. I have a total of 33 years in tow trucks, light to heavy duty. And I have OTR 94 to 96 for SNI and in 2000 for a reefer company which went out of business so I went back to towing

I have been driving heavy duty tow truck and I am always towing tractor trailer combinations in to repair shops and from wrecks. Now this means i will weight about 110,000 pounds and be 105 or so feet long.. (yeah we have permits for this)
But when talking to trucking companies about a job, I have no experience driving truck or moving combination vehicles DAH.
They are telling me that I have to go to school to learn to drive truck and all that.Roadmedic and slickwillie1971 Thank this. -
You look for team.or solo, crst is team only, they will put you in a one week refresher course,
then 28 days with a trainer, tip for crst start looking for a co driver early, talk to as many as you can get details about their life style so you don,t get a bone head, then get some time in talking to other drivers as you work for crst to find a company you like, I like most of the pepole at create just my two sence. Good luck and good miles to you. Bill104 10-4

I don't understand it. My dac is clean as a whistle, mvr is clean, and my background is spotless. But even the company with the big blue banana boats told me I had to have at least 30 days experience or I would have to retake my schooling. I payed 4500 bucks for my cdl schooling in '01. I'm not doing that again. I really want to drive again but I just can't catch a break.

I preciate the feedback. I talked to a guy at crst today and he took all my info said he would call back and he didn't. I had told him I didn't know about the team thing done with my ex wife and thats the reason she is my ex. Can't deal with someone else driving besides, can't sleep.

I called a recruiter there today, her name was Heidi or something like that, she told me I would have to get a years experience. She set it up to call back in Dec of 2012 to find out if I will be ready to go to work with them then. But thank you for the referral.

most companies require at least one year of recent exp. to give you a chance. otherwise you will need to get a refresher course as things have changed a lot. ie regulations, hos, speed limits in some states, and a whole slu of other stuff.

i was in a similar thing i left the country for 5 years. ended with CR England. They put me in a refresher course. was actually the full thing except i didnt have to take the cdl test. Cost $500 but taken out of first 2 checks. then 30 days trainer, and 60 days with phase 2 trying to get me to lease. I think they changed the training but they can be a foot back in just do the bs then get a good company. If you want to lease and loose your house. then do that only 30 days after schooling.
