I remember driving for PAM briefly and working with auto's was the worst. No pulling power going up hill, the acceleration was terrible and it reminded me why I love manuals. Just my experience though...

its like anything its all on preference.
I drive a M984A1R2 HEMMET wrecker. It will tow anything with wheels regardless of size. Its a beast and will do it while off road. and yup it rocks an Allison Auto 5 spd at that. Along with 95% of all current Army vehicles, there easier to teach people to drive, can do a great job at what there designed for(towing flatbed, tanker, tanks ect)
We used to have old 5 spds and inline air assisted 16spds.I loved those things,,,lots of fun -
I tested in an auto and have zero restrictions.. Maybe different states do it different but not here in NY. -
I was recently behind an automatic when I did a favor for a buddy and all I can say is that I hated it. I was in a F750 with a C7 and an allison 6 speed pulling only a three car trailer and I would lose 10 to 15 mph when climbing hills. The trans would not downshift into a lower gear even when the down arrow was pressed. Also when I took off I would have to push it to the floor to get the truck to take off. I would rather have a manual where I know I can always drop a gear and pull a hill or take off without having to floor it over having a computer decide when I should change gears but thats just my two cents on that.
Also frito lay is going to all autos for the fuel mileage. The ten speed tandems they have were getting 7.5 to 7.6 mpg and the new single axles they have are getting close to 8.5 with autos but I dont think its just the trans giving them the extra mileage its the lighter weight of the single axle over the tandems.
